Injury Bug Biting Azzi Fudd Again Draws a Fit From Wings Fans – “Should’ve Drafted Olivia”
Many claim that the only reason Azzi Fudd went No. overall to the Dallas Wings is because of Paige Bueckers.

When the Dallas Wings drafted Azzi Fudd with the No. 1 overall pick, everyone understood they wanted to reunite her with leading superstar and girlfriend Paige Bueckers.
The 23-year-old going for the top pick did draw some question marks. For starters, many pointed out that even though she produced her best college season to date, it was mostly because of the UConn system, rather than her own abilities.
Sure, she is a top-tier prospect, but many felt the Wings would have been much better off drafting a dynamic point guard such as Olivia Miles. Instead, the latter went to the Minnesota Lynx and has already won multiple accolades, including becoming an All-Star starter.
Fudd, on the other hand, looked like the fourth or fifth-best player on the Wings’ starting five. Sure, her scoring and elite perimeter defense helped the team surge in the middle of the season.
But since their August 5th loss to the Washington Mystics, the Virginia native has been missing in action. Now, her team announced that the rookie will undergo an arthroscopic procedure to correct her ‘ongoing right knee soreness,’ effectively ending her season.
Dallas Wings rookie guard Azzi Fudd will undergo an arthroscopic procedure to address ongoing right knee soreness, the team announced today. Fudd will have the procedure done in Connecticut early next week and will begin rehabbing immediately. With less than five weeks remaining…

With this, her rookie season ends with 30 games in which she averaged 13.1 points. More importantly, it raises questions about the Wings’ playoff chances considering their awful 2-7 losing streak since the All-Star break.
Fans reveal their anger after Azzi Fudd news drops
It so happens that another question mark many had about Azzi Fudd was her durability. The guard has suffered numerous injuries to both knees starting in high school and into college.
Now, with her first season in the WNBA over because of another knee procedure, they questioned whether it was important to keep Paige Bueckers happy or draft a reliable All-Star who was available with their No. 1 pick. Check out examples of those reactions below.
Should’ve drafted Olivia. But had to make sure your franchise player had her boo near by. I get it.

Wow, sounds like a disappointing end to a ‘below expectations’ first season for a #1 draft pick. I’m hoping for a better season 2 for her. Praying that her professional career isn’t plagued by this knee injury.

A competent front office would have never taken her with the #1 overall pick but we all know the women's game puts anything related to the actual game as secondary

The Wings drafted a player with extreme injury concerns over a better prospect without those concerns.

I hope she recovers well as I’m biased for any athlete from the DMV, but she tore her ACL & MCL in HS. She tore her right ACL and meniscus in college.
This is bad news😟 https://t.co/oVkLhb9nUq
Now y’ll understand why I said after last draft, I will draft Olivia and trade Page to the team that draft Azzi or get a big trade, that include a first pick, second pick and a big player or a good six one, now they have a back court with destroy knees…..

I understand the talent but her injury history is just too risky. I would be trying to trade her to get back some assets

She was obviously not the best player in the draft and has had multiple major surgeries on both her knees… No player with injury history like this should be a top pick in any sport.

I'll get killed for this by the UConn mafia but Miles or Fam should've been the choice. If Wings picked Fam & didnt sign Smith they could've signed a good player. If they picked Miles they might've had the greatest backcourt in W history

No one can predict the future, and as some believe, Olivia Miles is already an MVP-caliber player. However, some rebuke that by pointing out how the point guard is thriving on a championship-caliber team.
Azzi Fudd’s presence alongside her partner did win an NCAA championship. Therefore, it may be a bit too early to write off her career as one that should be defined by her injuries.
Azzi Fudd confirms relationship with Paige Bueckers
Amidst the anger from Dallas Wings fans, some of them took shots at the relationship between Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers as the reason the team had to agree to their demands to reunite them.

After the draft, fans remember how the team’s PR stopped questions about their relationship. That drew backlash, as many felt it was hypocritical of both the player and the franchise. Now, in a documentary about the Huskies, Fudd confirms her relationship status.
Paige and I are a couple. Everyone close to us that was important knew. But it was one of those things that was just it’s private. Not a secret, but it’s private.

The 2026 All-Star Three-Point Shootout champion confirmed what Bueckers had mentioned a year ago. In this Netflix documentary, the latter did lean into how the spark between them was more than what friends have. Now, Fudd is reiterating that their relationship is a private matter, even though it is public knowledge.
