Italian tennis ace Jannik Sinner made it to his maiden US Open final on Friday (September 6) after beating Jack Draper 7-5, 7-6(3), 6-2 on a humid day at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was not an easy ride, however, as the extreme weather seemed to affect both players. While Draper vomited quite a few times on the court, Sinner injured his left wrist.
In the second set, Sinner rocketed a screaming forehand winner from deep in the court off a hard Draper smash. He immediately grabbed his left wrist, wincing. The Italian eventually had to take a medical timeout and consulted with a physio. While the World No. 1 went on to win the match in straight sets, his left wrist seems to be severely impacted.
After his win, Jannik Sinner was spotted with an ice pack on his left wrist. However, the extent of the injury did not seem serious as the player walked with a smile with his girlfriend and WTA star Anna Kalinskaya also seen in good spirits.
Jannik Sinner shares update on his wrist injury, says he is “relaxed” ahead of US Open final
After his semifinal win, Jannik Sinner shared an update on the extent of his wrist injury. The Italian revealed that it did not look too serious as he was able to play freely after his physio “loosened it” up during the match.
Sinner said he will wait for a day before assessing the extent of the injury. The Italian has a day off to rest his wrist and recover for a grueling final against Taylor Fritz, who defeated Frances Tiafoe in the other semifinal on Friday night.
The physio loosened it up very fast on court, so after I felt okay in the beginning. Then after it went away by playing, which is good. Let's see how it is tomorrow when it's cold. It's gonna be a different feeling. Hopefully is nothing to concern about. I'm quite relaxed, because if it's something bad, you feel it straightaway a bit more.Jannik Sinner said in his post-match press conference (H/T: ATP Tour)
Sinner has had a few injury issues this season. While he missed a few tournaments due to a back injury, the Italian missed out on the Paris Olympics due to tonsilitis. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old came back strong to win the Cincinnati Open.
