Io Shirai is prepared to defend her NXT Championship at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance

NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai has a huge match coming up for her at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance. Shirai will be defending her title in a triple-threat match against Toni Storm and Mercedes Martinez.

Shirai has held the NXT Women’s title for over 250 days. She had defeated Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair in a triple-threat match to win the title. Since then, she has defended the title successfully on a couple of occasions.

Io Shirai recently discussed her opponents in an interview with Sports Illustrated. She mentioned that how experienced both her opponents are, and even commended their hunger to win the title.

“Despite Toni’s young age, she has already experienced and accomplished so much in this business. It is not easy to travel around the world, compete in different promotions and stay on top wherever you go. Toni has managed to do that wherever she has been, including NXT. And Mercedes Martinez, I feel a lot of veteran confidence with Mercedes since she has had the longest career among the three of us. The fact that she came to NXT for title shots proves she is still very hungry, and not just satisfied with being here or what she has done in the past.”

Road ahead for Io Shirai

The focus right now for Shirai is undoubtedly the NXT TakeOver: Vengeance. She has not one, but two opponents to take care of. But being a fighting Champion, she is well aware that everyone on the roster wants her title. Other wrestlers too would be in search for an opportunity to get a shot at the title.

But if Shirai fails to defend her title at the NXT special show, it might open up bigger doors for her. WWE might consider of bumping Shirai to the main roster. Shirai has the skills, talent and is also a fan-favorite. We might see her follow the footsteps of Asuka and Kairi Sane.
