IPL 2020: Delhi Capitals vs Kings XI Punjab, Kagiso Rabada the “Super Over Man”
South Africa’s star bowler Kagiso Rabada delivered another herculean ‘Super Over‘ performance after Marcus Stoinis’ all-round salvage to confirm a thrilling win for Delhi Capitals (DC) in their opening IPL 2020 clash against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).
In the game full of roller coaster rides, KXIP opening batsman Mayank Agarwal’s heroic performance (89 off 60) went worthless as his side failed to overhaul the target of 158 runs in 20 overs and it results in the Super Over.
Rabada managed to dismiss KXIP captain KL Rahul and batsman Nicholas Pooran on the successive deliveries, leave DC with a measly target of 3 runs. The Rahul-led side posted the lowest Super Over score in IPL history. Delhi easily chased the three-run target to start their season with a thrilling triumph.
Kagiso Rabada is the winning performer: Shreyas Iyer
The previous lowest score in the history of the IPL was six by Mumbai Indians fast bowlers Mitchell Johnson and Jasprit Bumrah on two different occasions. While Johnson delivered his Super Over against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2015, veteran Jasprit Bumrah bowled it against the extinct franchise Gujarat Lions in the year 2017.
After this Super Over win, Kagiso Rabada also became only the second bowler after Jasprit Bumrah to bowl in two Super Over triumphs in the IPL history.
In the previous season, paceman defended 10 runs in the Super Over to guide Delhi Capitals to an exciting feat against Kolkata Knight Riders. The Capitals ended their run chase at 185 for 6 in 20 overs, taking the match to Super Over.
The home side arranged just 10 runs in the Super Over bowled by paceman Krishna Prasidh but Rabada delivered yorkers flawlessly to withhold KKR. The team needed five off the final ball but managed just one.
Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer praised Rabada as the “winning performer” while also complementing Marcus Stoinis for his game-changing knock in the first innings.
“It was difficult to see the game turning in different directions. We are used to this. Even last season we faced these. KG is the winning performer, and the way Stoinis batted was game-changing. It was important for us to get wickets since the total was small, and I knew if I saved KG’s over for the end it would be helpful,” Iyer said in the post-match presentation.
