Rohit Sharma, the IPL-winning captain: I’m quite happy with how things went the whole season. We said at the start that we need the winning habit. We couldn’t have asked for anything more, right on the money from ball 1 and we never looked back. I think a lot of credit goes to the people who worked behind the scenes – often they go unnoticed. Our work started long before the IPL started, and we wanted to make sure we filled the gaps in previous seasons. I had to find the balance to get the best out of them. I’m not someone who can run behind them with a stick, and it’s important to instill confidence in the players. Krunal, Hardik and Pollard have done their job for a long time, they know their roles. Rahul missed out today, and we need to make sure we put an arm around him and assure him that he didn’t do anything wrong and that it was a tactical move. We made sure Ishan and Surya had confidence – just have to let Ishan loose, and Surya is a more matured player. The kind of form he was in, I should have sacrificed my wicket for Surya. But throughout the tournament he has played some incredible shots. Unfortunately we couldn’t have the fans at the stadium

Mahela Jayewardene, representing the Mumbai Indians: It was a tough tournament. There were a lot of superstitions about odd years. I have to congratulate Ricky and his team, they have had a great season and they were a tough opponent today. WE had a great preparation, and we tried to manage them well and ensure they didn’t overdo or underdo any of the work. Big-hitting has been in MI’s DNA for a long time. We have tried to bring in the touch play a little bit to balance it out. Credit to the management who bought into our ideas and that helped create history today.

DC captain Shreyas Iyer: Ricky, the amount of freedom he gives us is outstanding. THe way he motivates players is simply amazing. His team meetings and motivational speeches it quite incredible. The IPL always amazes you, it’s one of the toughest leagues to play. I’m overwhelmed to be part of it, and I’m really proud of my boys, the way they have played to reach the final, it’s not easy. Winning the IPL would have been better, but we will see to it that we lift the trophy next year.

Ricky Ponting representing the Delhi Capitals: MI have been the best team, they’ve beaten us 4 times. Being coach it’s a little frustrating in the dugout but at the end of the day I’m really proud of the job the boys have done. Iyer is a brilliant player, captain and person. He’s definitely grown in stature in the last 12 months. Hopefully we can work together a bit more in the future. We probably had 3.5 weeks of prep before the tournament, so we had a little too much preparation. We had a really challenging tour, I was sceptical about leaving Australia but the organizers have done a terrific job. I think we have the youngest squad in the tournament and I’m extremely proud of them.

The Most Valuable Player is Jofra Archer: Really grateful to receive the award. It didn’t go as well for the team, and hopefully this has shown what I can do and I hope it helps the team a little more later.

The Purple Cap winner is Kagiso Rabada. The Orange Cap winner is KL Rahul:  A big thank you to all the supporters. Winning the orange cap feels nice, but it would’ve been nicer if we had gone further in the tournament.

KL Rahul is the Dream11 Gamechanger of the Season and the Altroz Super-Striker of the Season is Kieron Pollard. Unacademy Let’s Crack it Award for most sixes goes to Ishan Kishan. The CRED Powerplayer of the season is Trent Boult.

Mumbai Indians win the Fairplay award.

Devdutt Padikkal is the Emerging Player of the Season: It’s a really great achievement for me and gives me great confidence for whatever lies ahead.

Trent Boult is the Man of the Match: Some days I do like the powerplay. It’s been a good few months, giving the franchise a good start. With everything going on, I’ve been welcomed in the side. To have made it across the line, it’s been worth it. I wasn’t aware of the talk, but I did have a niggle coming into the match. I wanted to be on the stage and happy I came through. I’d like to say I’m relatively experienced. Just another match, and I was clear what I had to do. Tried to take a few early wickets, swing the new ball a little bit, that’s been my role in the side.

Kieron Pollard: It’s a great feeling, means a lot. Fifth trophy.. Have been here for 11 years. We have a quiet celebration. He is a different West Indian. He goes at 6am to the gym. The amount of trophies, the amount of talent that’s there, you can say MI is the best T20 team going around. The management, the support staff, the effort they put in to make. Dwayne Bravo you are behind me now (about number of T20 titles), I have to say that on camera (smiles).

Jayant Yadav: Just happy to win the title. Great feeling to be a champion side for two consecutive years. Shows the strength of the franchise. It’s the effort you put in throughout the season. It’s a long tournament and you have to be professional and on your toes. It’s about working constantly throughout the season. It’s part and parcel of playing in this league. There’ll be small-small battles you have to fight. Small matchups.

Rahul Chahar: Feels great. Me not playing isn’t important, winning is. I feel great to have contributed to us coming first. I can bowl quick, bowl slow and I have the variations as well. It takes me half an hour for this hairstyle before the match.

Nathan Coulter-Nile – Felt good as a first time winner. Patto bowled beautifully, so I was happy to sit on the sidelines and wait for a chance, which it came. Felt started doing well towards the end of the tournament.

Quinton de Kock: Missing the family is difficult for everyone. It’s a great feeling. You see what it means to the franchise (Nita Ambani unknowingly interrupts and apologises with a smile knowing an interview was going on). There were questions around if MI can we win back to back titles. Everybody worked extra hard. The support staff and everyone, we couldn’t have done it without them. It’s pretty special.

Ishan Kishan – I wasn’t looking in good shape at the start of this season, so I had a good chat with Hardik bhai and Krunal bhai,  I wanted to work on my fitness, just keep working on my off-side game. Wanted to do what was good for the team with the bat and score big runs.

Hardik Pandya: I enjoy what I do. For me it was about opportunity. Wasn’t able to bowl this year. It’s just about backing myself. As Krunal said it’s all about preparation and we did really well in that bracket.

Krunal Pandya: It’s the hunger to be at the top always. We never take any game lightly and in every game there was always that 100% effort. Even back in Mumbai we prepared hard, we came one month early, everyone knew their roles and everyone was just going out there and executing what they were doing in the nets. There was never a doubt about Ishan Kishan’s talent. He was ready to listen and ready to improve. All credit goes to him for how he came back in this season, It isn’t easy to bat at four, then open and come back to four. Really really happy about how he has gone about this season.

Jasprit Bumrah – Very happy, we have worked very hard, we started preparing much earlier before other teams, we worked through process, all of which has got us a lot of results. We wanted to break the jinx of winning every alternative years – the goal has been achieved now. It means a great deal, the pandemic has been such a shock, everyone have been stuck at home. We are just grateful to come back and play cricket, something we love. We are just happy we could bring back some smiles to the people back home, give them some entertainment (for people watching at home), it’s been a tough few months. From the first game, I felt my rhythm was upbut the lat piece in the jig-saw puzzle was missing. When I bowled the super over here (against RCB), there was some anxiety going on towards the end, but when I bowled that superover, I felt I could execute against AB and Virat. Since then, my confidence went up, I just wanted to keep things simple and repeat the basics every time.

Mumbai Indians were just on another level this year. After the defeat against CSK on the first day, MI put their foot on the accelerator and never looked back. They were head and shoulders above every other team in the tournament and deservedly got their hands on their 5th IPL trophy. For Delhi Capitals, it was heartbreak in the final. They can hold their head high however, as they have had an excellent season under Ricky Ponting. They will look to recover, rebuild and come back stronger in next year’s IPL.

19th Over: Nortje is in for probably the last over of the IPL 2020. Nearly there! One needed from 10 balls.
Wicket! – Wow! What an anti-climax. Hardik is gone! A bouncer and Hardik holes out to Rahane. So it won’t be Hardik to hit the winning runs. It will be his brother Krunal.
Krunal defends the ball and hits the winning runs! That’s that. MI are IPL 2020 champions! They were well and truly the top team in the tournament. Well-deserved!

18th Over: Rabada is in.
Wicket! – Rabada castles Kieron Pollard off the inside-edge. But it will be of little effect now as MI are cruising.
Hardik is the new man in.
Ishan Kishan has deftly touched one for a four. Just 4 required now. On the verge! Almost there!

17th Over: Nortje is in.
Wicket! – Rohit Sharma has holed out to deep mid-wicket. The substitute fielder Lalit Yadav takes a stunning diving catch. Rohit is gone and he has all but won his side the title. And Pollard drives Nortje for a lofted four over mid-off. He follows it up with another 4. 147/3

16th Over: Dubey now and Ishan Kishan is doing it in a hurry! MI are surely winning this! Fifth IPL title incoming. Dubey is serving up juicy deliveries with hopes of getting a wicket and Kishan is freeing those arms and slashing him for boundaries. 11 off the over. 20 runs needed from 4 overs.

15th Over: Marcus Stoinis is into the attack. Can he spark a remarkable turnaround? Seems unlikely. And that’s a huge six from Ishan Kishan, his 30th of the season. 126/2.

14th Over: Axar is in for his last. Sad faces in the DC dugout. MI are getting the runs easily. Gentle pushes are yielding singles and that is all they need now and an occasional boundary or two.

13th Over: Ashwin is back. This game is showcasing Rohit Sharma at his best. He is picking the gaps, finding the boundaries and lofting deliveries at will. 112/2 in 13

12th Over: Rabada now. The singles and the twos are coming easily for MI. And the boundaries as well. Rohit is on fire here. And he gets to fifty! 102/2 in 12 overs.

11th Over: Ashwin is back into the attack with the hopes of picking up a wicket or two. It’s now desperation time for DC.
Wicket! – Huge mix-up and Suryakumar has sacrificed his wicket. Rohit is devastated. That was class from Surya though to sacrifice his wicket. 91/2

10th Over: Axar is back. Rohit is in no mood to stop hitting. He’s finding the boundaries at will. MI are cantering to victory here. Unless. Unless DC pull off something special. 88/1 in 10.

9th Over: Dubey is back. That’s a six! Rohit is in the mood today. He is long overdue a captain’s knock in this year’s IPL. And he’s delivering in the final much like his counterpart. And that is another one! Dubey is getting the treatment! MI well and firmly on top now. 81/1 in 9.

8th Over: Axar is into the attack after the time-out. The game is still not over for DC. They need wickets. Tidy over. 67/1 in 8 overs.

7th Over: Dubey is into the attack. MI are now happy with the singles thanks to the platform they’ve laid for themselves in the Powerplay. 65/1

6th Over: Axar Patel is into the attack. Tidy over. 3 off it. 61/1 in 6.

5th Over: Stoinis is into the attack and he’s got rid of Quinton de Kock off the first ball!
Wicket! – Quinton de Kock nicks one to the keeper! Off Stoinis’ very first ball. Finally something to cheer about for DC. Stoinis with the crucial breakthrough!
Suryakumar Yadav is the new man in and he gets four off his very first ball. And that’s a six off the next ball! MI on top despite the wicket! 58/1

4th Over: Anrich Nortje is into the attack. DC are looking clueless here as MI are pummeling DC’s famed bowling attack. It’s all looking bleak. And that’s a huge six! MI are doing it in a hurry. 45/0.

3rd Over: Ashwin continues. DC need wickets. They need them now. de Kock is just in the mood today. He gets another four. DC have no clue here. 33/0.

2nd Over: Purple cap holder and winner Kagiso Rabada is into the attack. de Kock is in the mood to attack here and he gets a four through the offside. He gets a leg-bye four off the next ball through the legside that creeps past Pant. de Kock is looking to attack every ball here. And he gets a huge six! Rabada is leaking runs here! And that’s another four! 18 off the over!

1st Over: Ravi Ashwin to begin. And Rohit has taken him on off the third ball and got a six just over long-on! Just 8 off the first over despite the six.

Second Innings: Back for the second innings. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock to open.

So, DC have recovered from a horror start to get to a competitive total. But given how well they recovered courtesy Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, they could have reached 170. MI’s bowling at the death was excellent which has ensured DC haven’t reached 160 here. It will still be a tricky chase especially on a stage like this. An exciting chase coming up! How will dew influence proceedings? How will DC use their three spinners and two pacers and how many overs will Stoinis bowl? Back in 10 minutes to find out!

20th Over: Coulter-Nile now. Iyer is unable to middle the ball when it matters.
Wicket! – Axar holes out to deep mid-wicket off a slower ball and DC are finishing on a below-par note.
Iyer is still out there and a six or two can take the score to 160 which would be a competitive one.
But no, Iyer is not able to get under the ball. Rabada is the new man if that matters. And Iyer finally gets a six! Off the fifth ball. Can he get another one to get his side’s score to 160?
Wicket! – Wicket off the last ball. Rabada is out for a diamond duck. And the final score is 156.

19th Over: Bumrah for his last. Excellent lines and lengths from MI’s pace spearhead. And there’s a review for LBW against Iyer. And the on-field decision of not-out stays as the impact is just about outside-off. 6 off the over.

18th Over: Boult is back for his final over.
Wicket! – Hetmyer holes out to third-man off a bad shot. It was a slow ball and Hemywer was expecting a faster one. So his upper cut has gone straight to third man.
Axar is the new man. And Axar has carved Boult for a boundary.

17th Over: Bumrah is back and he is welcomed back into the attack with a four through the off-side. 50 for Iyer! A captain’s knock for Iyer. He holds the key now to get his side to a big score. He crunches the next ball for a four over point. 136/4 in 17.

16th Over: Jayant Yadav is back for his fourth over. Hetmyer is struggling a bit against off-spin. This has been an excellent over so far. But Hetmyer goes inside out off the last ball to get a four. 125/4.

15th Over: Coulter-Nile continues. That’s vintage Pant! An off-balance four over fine-leg. And it’s fifty! First fifty for him this season. What better stage to do it than the IPL final? And he gets another four off a top-edge over the wicketkeeper!
Wicket! – Rishabh Pant holes out to deep square-leg looking to pull it away for a six. He has played a great knock here however. He has set the stage for Hetmyer to come and hit some lusty blows along with Iyer.
Hetmyer is in.

14th Over: Krunal Pandya now. 100 up with a wide. Pandya is trying to keep it tidy by bowling balls at speeds of more than 100 kmph. And he is succeeding in doing so. Pant guides another quick delivery for a boundary. 108/3

Strategic time-out now. The next 7 overs are key for DC. They have remarkably well thanks to an assured partnership from Shreya Iyer and Rishabh Pant. They will now have to put their foot on the accelerator and try to push their team’s score to 170. 170 on a final will in all probability be a competitive one. But it still is very far away for DC. They will have to ensure they don’t lose wickets and go for the kill. They still have Shimron Hetmyer and Axar Patel to come. So, DC have room to take risks from now.

13th Over: Coulter-Nile now. The partnership is now 74 runs! Good over from Coulter-Nile. Just five singles off the over. 99/3 in 13.

12th Over: Kieron Pollard is into the attack and he stops just before bowling in trademark fashion. Pant is opening up here and has slashed one through the offside for a four. Six! Shreyas Iyer gets into the attack and that’s a biggie! Huge six! 94/3 in 12.

11th Over: Now MI have brought back Bumrah. DC should look to play out Bumrah here. The current run-rate is not bad by any means. And that they have done. 81/3.

10th Over: Krunal continues. First six! Rishabh Pant unleashes a stunning lofted strike straight past the bowler! Sign of things to come? Another six!!! Rishabh Pant! This is more like the Pant we know! An off-balance trademark heave over cow-corner. Great over for DC! 75/3 in 10.

Strategic-time out! MI are on top. But DC have done just about enough to ensure they are now out of this game yet. Boult breathed fire and the DC batters had no clue. But once they weathered his storm, DC haven’t had a lot of nervy moments as they have been happy to nick the singles and twos with some good running. The run-rate is still more than 6 so if these two can stay at the crease till the 15th over by just finding singles and braces and the odd boundary, they can aim for a competitive total. It will be easier said than done however, as MI still have three overs from Jasprit Bumrah to come.

9th Over: Jayant again. MI keeping it tight. No boundaries seem to come for DC. 59/3 in 9.

8th Over: Krunal Pandya is into the attack. Spin in tandem. Another tidy over. 51/3 in 8.

7th Over: Jayant changes ends. DC must bat positively and keep the scoreboard ticking without losing wickets or wasting balls. This is a huge stage for these two. They will have to stitch together a good partnership. Quiet over. 46/3

6th Over: Nathan Coulter-Nile is introduced into the attack. Dropped! Iyer slashes at a delivery outside off and Ishan Kishan almost pulled off a blinder. Had he pulled that off, that would have been a contender for the catch of the season! Iyer gets a boundary down the leg-side. 41/3 off 6.

5th Over: Boult for his third. MI are well and truly on top. How will DC come back? Iyer and Pant – two young international stars at the crease. What will their approach be? Iyer gets a boundary with a cover drive on the up. The run-rate isn’t too bad. It’s the wickets that is the problem for DC. Iyer with another sparkling cover-drive! Two fours in the over! Counter-attack? Or are DC just looking to get some quick runs before the Powerplay ends?

4th Over: Jayant Yadav is into the attack. Bumrah has been held back after the first over.
Wicket! – Jayant Yadav castles Shikhar Dhawan! Goes for an attacking shot and the ball completely eludes him to hit the stumps. Wow, whatever MI touches is turning to gold.
Rishabh Pant now.

3rd Over: Boult to continue. Dhawan pummels the first ball for a four! Counter-attack on the cards?
Wicket! – Boult strikes again! Rahane has nicked it down the leg side! Boult is breathing fire! MI on top!
Shreyas Iyer is in and oh my! He pokes at a bouncer and it just about eludes the wicketkeeper! And off the next ball Iyer loops a bouncing ball almost back to the bowler! Oh my! Every ball is producing drama!

2nd Over: Jasprit Bumrah now. Dhawan gets a fortuitous boundary off a bouncer! It’s all happening here. Terrific bowling. A yorker from Bumrah! Similar to the Qualifier 1 delivery! And Dhawan just about manages to dig it out! Wow! The nerves!

1st Over: Trent Boult to open proceedings.
Wicket! – What a start! Wow! Trent Boult has removed Marcus Stoinis off the very first ball. Can you believe it? Stoinis has edged it to the wicketkeeper.
Ajinkya Rahane is the new man here.
Dhawan gets going with a boundary. But what a start for MI this is. After all the hype and the build-up about Stoinis’ form, he gets out for a golden duck on the day of the final. 5/1

First Innings: Here we go! The start of the final is imminent. MI have entered the field. They are followed by the DC openers Shikhar Dhawan and Marcus Stoinis.

10 minutes to go for the all-important final to start!

Not many surprises at the toss. Rohit Sharma stated that he was confused about what to do at the toss as well. The only surprise is the exclusion of Rahul Chahar who has been very good in this year’s IPL but had an off-day in Qualifier 1.

Toss time! Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer are out in the middle. DC have won the toss and they will bat first in the final! DC have made no changes to their playing XI. MI have made one change to their line-up. Jayant Yadav replaces Rahul Chahar.

News coming in that Trent Boult is fit to play! About 5 minutes to go for the toss. What will the captain who wins the toss choose? Probably batting first. But the captain who loses the toss wouldn’t mind much. It really is difficult to gauge what is the perfect decision at the toss.

Pitch Report: “This pitch has been good. The whole square has been good. I see a beauty, I am licking my lips. This is the pitch used for that qualifier. There has been a good balance between bat and ball, with the ball coming on nicely. The faster bowlers have enjoyed bowling here. You’d bat first on this, but you’re not going to be disadvantaged by the toss,” reckon Mark Nicholas and Pommie Mbangwa.

These two sides met in Qualifier 1 and MI breezed to a comprehensive win. They scored a whopping 200 runs in the first innings and removed the DC top-order in the second cheaply. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult breathed fire and the DC batters had no clue. A lot will depend on how Dhawan, Stoinis and Rahane deal with MI’s fiery pace duo.

There have been various fun fan theories proposed by fans. Firstly, there has been the theory of there being a new champion every leap year (2008-RR, 2012-KKR, 2016-SRH, 2020-DC?). There is also the theory of MI winning every odd year which would again mean DC will win by the theory. All of these are pure fun and part of the conjecture and drama that make cricket and IPL the spectacle that they are.

Rohit Sharma has a phenomenal record in IPL finals. The MI skipper has won four out of four finals in which he has captained MI. Further, Sharma also lifted the IPL in 2009 when he turned up for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. For his counterpart Shreyas Iyer however, this will be unfamiliar territory. This is the franchise’s first IPL final in history. They will want to fire on all cylinders today when they take the field.

Mumbai Indians have looked unstoppable this season and will go into this one as favorites. Their head-to-head record against DC this year has been 3-0 which will further strengthen their case as favorites. But, MI and DC will know it is the all-important fourth match that matters. The form book and reputation book will be thrown out of the window when these two sides take the field. It is all about what happens today.

One hour to go for the toss! Should be interesting to see what the captains choose at the toss. Although the trend in this year’s IPL towards the end of the tournament has been to chase first, DC chose to bat first in Qualifier 2 and won. Similarly, in all of MI’s successful IPL final victories, MI batted first. So both teams will be temped to bat first today. The captain who loses the toss won’t be too worried as well.

IPL 2020 Final Preview: Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals

After 59 encounters, Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 found the two finalists: Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC). The top two teams of the tournament will be up against each other for the fourth time this season. Interestingly, Mumbai emerged victorious at all the three previous clashes that took place between both the sides in this edition.

Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals will lock horns on November 10 (Tuesday) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. The game will kickstart from its usual timings, 7:30 PM (IST) onwards.

Team preview

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Without any surprises, Mumbai Indians reached yet another IPL finals. The four-time IPL champions looked like one of the most dangerous teams even before the start of the tournament. As a result, MI comfortably qualified for the finals after beating the Capitals in Qualifier 1.

Trent Boult got injured during the last game and may miss out on playing this all-important clash. But defending champions MI has the experience to put up a fighting performance in the knockout matches like this.

Delhi Capitals (DC)

Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals reached the finals for the first time in the IPL history. After losing a one-sided game against Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier, DC bounced back to register a thumping victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad in qualifier two.

Delhi has a comparatively younger side and will be under pressure against the MI Paltan. DC made several tactical changes in their previous clash, and it would be interesting to see if they continue with them in the ultimate game of the tournament as well.
