IPL 2020 : “He delivered whenever his team required it the most,” Devdutt Paddikal names Gautam Gambhir as his cricketing idol

Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal was undoubtedly the find of Indian Premier League 2020. Not many would have imagined Padikkal breaking into the star-studded RCB lineup. But the youngster didn’t only make it to the big stage, he went on to announce his arrival with a bang. Paddikal was adjudged as the Emerging Player of the Year for his 473 runs in 15 matches in his debut season, the first to do so.
The 20-year-old hailed Gautam Gambhir as his cricketing idol. Paddikal shares that the way Gambhir stepped up every time his team was in a crunch situation impressed him a lot.
“I used to enjoy his (Gambhir) batting and really liked the fact that he would deliver whenever his team would require it the most. Whenever the team was under pressure you could count on him. He is one of my cricket idols,” Padikkal told India Today.
Learnt a lot at RCB
Padikkal had the privilege of sharing the dressing room with some of the greats of the game in skipper Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Aaron Finch. Sharing his experience in the RCB camp, the southpaw feels that he has learnt a lot about how to deal with situations in the middle. Padikkal adds that he is awe of the way the big names focussed on their performance unfazed by the results.
“I have learnt a lot with so many senior players around. It has changed my mindset as to how to deal with a lot of situations. They (senior players) keep themselves stable throughout the season regardless of how the team is performing and would focus on the process and not on the result,” the Karnataka batsman said.
Many former players in Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar and Brad Hogg have heaped praises on Padikkal for his wonders in IPL 2020.
