After winning the toss, RR skipper Steve Smith elected to field first and his side made two changes in the playing XI. Jos Buttler and Ankit Rajpoot came into the side for David Miller and Yashasvi Jaiswal. On the other hand, KXIP played this game with an unchanged XI after they decided to go with the winning combination.

Rajasthan Royals opened their innings with Jos Buttler and Steve Smith, but the former got out cheaply inside the powerplay. Steve Smith played well for his quick half-century while it was Sanju Samson who kept their hopes alive till the end.

Samson played a blissful knock of 85 runs off just 42 deliveries, but Rahul Tewatia emerged as the hero of the match in the end. At one stage where he was struggling to even connect the ball, he went on to smash 30 runs in a single over off Sheldon Cottrell. With two sixes from Jofra Archer in the penultimate over, RR clinched the game with three remaining deliveries. This run-chase also became the highest ever successful run-chase in IPL history.
