It was Kolkata Knight Riders’ resurrection who bounced back from an 8 wicket hammering by RCB to reignite their playoff hopes. Put up an all-round performance in Abu Dhabi, KKR sealed a 59 run victory over Delhi Capitals. To add to their joy, as many as three under fire players stepped up to get the job done for their side.

Earlier in the innings, the pair of Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine put an explosive 115 run stand to help KKR put 194 on board. To add the icing on the cake, Varun Chakravarthy stepped to take his first fifer in the IPL handing KKR a comfortable victory.

This is surreal: Varun Chakravarthy

Varun Chakravarthy celebrates a wicket

Chakravarthy scalped five crucial wickets giving just 20 runs in his quota of four overs. The Tamil Nadu spinner shares that he was under some stress for not being able to scalp wickets. But, Shreyas Iyer‘s wicket gave him great confidence. Defending a huge total, one might have expected him to bowl safe lengths and contain the runs but Chakravarthy kept attacking and it paid off great for him.

This is surreal. The last few games I didn’t get wickets. I wanted to get one or two today, but thank god I got five. I enjoyed Shreyas Iyer’s wicket the most. I was bowling to the shorter boundary so I had to attack the stumps,” the bowler said.

Chakravarthy was emotional after the spectacular performance as he thanks his family members for having faith in him. The 29-year-old went on to reveal that in 2015 he thought of trying something different due to financial needs. And it led him to the IPL.

I want to thank my mother Hema Malini, father Vinoth Chakravarthy and fiancée Neha. And all my physios. Around 2015 when I was not making much money as an architect, I thought I will try something else when I wasn’t able to meet my needs,” he further added.

KKR face KXIP next with the playoff spot on the line for both the sides.
