The Delhi Capitals were one of the franchises who were very active during the trade window before the auction and it has paid off for them handsomely. DC finished second in the Indian Premier League 2020 thanks to some sleek moves before the auction. They had traded Ravichandran Ashwin from Kings XI Punjab and Ajinkya Rahane from Rajasthan Royals, both of whom have proved the move right. But their move of trading off New Zealand quick Trent Boult to Mumbai Indians still eludes the comprehension of many in the cricketing circle.

And the move came back to bite them in the first qualifier against MI. Boult scalped two wickets in his very first over the game which left DC with a hole beyond repair. Chasing a mammoth 201, Delhi lost the game by 57 runs thanks to top-order collapse. Boult has been breathing fire with the new ball this season having picked up 22 wickets in 14 games for MI.

Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody is disappointed over the peculiar move by DC. Moody adds that if they wanted to cash the left-arm pacer out, they simply could have released him for the auction. Instead, they gifted him to one of the strongest sides in the side making them nearly invulnerable and Moody expressed his disappointment about it.

Moody feels that the DC think tank should have opted for the latter option and let the franchises fight it out in the auction for the services of Boult.

To me that was an extraordinary move. And I know that at that point at that trade, they didn’t know that the tournament was going to move to the UAE. But even so, Trent Boult would be deadly in Mumbai because that is one venue where the ball would swing,” Moody told ESPNCricinfo.

And Boult is one of the best powerplay bowlers in the IPL so to gift him to one of the strongest teams, if not the strongest team of the whole tournament, an ace like that, it’s extraordinary. If they were wanting to cash their chips in so to speak with Trent Boult, they should have just done it through the auction and let not only Mumbai but other teams fish around for Trent Boult.
