IPL 2020: ‘We planned well but did not execute’ – Ricky Ponting points out what went wrong

Mumbai Indians (MI) thrashed Delhi Capitals (DC) by 57 runs in the first Qualifier of the Indian Premier League to qualify for the final. DC had no clue to the explosive hitting of the MI batters and later against their pace bowling duo of Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah.

Put in to bat, MI lost skipper Rohit Sharma for a duck. However, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav rebuilt the innings well while finding boundaries regularly. After the former’s dismissal, Ishan Kishan walked in. Yadav got out after striking a fifty but Kishan continued and got himself his fifty. Hardik Pandya displayed his hitting power at the death as MI reached 200.

In the chase, DC got off to the worst start possible as they lost their top 3 Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan for ducks as Boult and Bumrah breathed fire. The chase never got going. Marcus Stoinis and Axar Patel were the only ones that offered resistance. In the end, DC could only manage 143. With the win, MI qualified for the final while DC will have to play the winner of the Eliminator between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second Qualifier.

‘Execution was miles off‘ – Ricky Ponting

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Ricky Ponting, the head-coach of Delhi Capitals spoke about what went wrong for his side. “I think it was because of the execution in the first few overs. In the first over, we went for 15 or 16 and you are on the back foot straight away. We did fight our way back into the game. We felt that we planned really well but under pressure, our execution was miles off.”

He then spoke on the few positives for DC from the game. “I think Stoinis showed today how classy a player he is. He has really developed his game against spin bowling. It is great that we got something out of the game. Axar Patel played really well at the back and they are the only positives including Ashwin’s bowling spell,” the Australian said.

Looking forward to the Qualifier 2, Ponting said, “Sunrisers and RCB are both very good sides and deserve their position on the table. So we will get some training done in the next couple of days and get ready for the next challenge.”
