IPL 2021: WATCH – Amit Mishra gets warned for applying saliva on the ball

Amit Mishra

Delhi Capitals (DC) leg-spinner Amit Mishra was warned by the umpires yesterday during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Ahmedabad after he was spotted applying saliva on the ball. Doing so is prohibited according to the rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well as the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

DC fell to RCB yesterday in agonizing fashion as they lost by a margin of 1 run. It was an AB de Villiers special that firstly helped the Virat Kohli-led side post a good total of 171. In the chase, DC were behind on the run-rate but kept the scoreboard ticking and the match boiled down to six runs required off the last ball to win. DC skipper Rishabh Pant was only to able to hit a four as RCB came up trumps and went top of the table.

DC got off to an excellent start in the Powerplay yesterday as the RCB openers were dismissed out bowled off consecutive balls. Firstly, Avesh Khan sent back Virat Kohli while Ishant Sharma removed Devdutt Padikkal. Soon after the Powerplay ended, Amit Mishra was brought into the attack to increase the pressure on the new batsmen.

As soon as the wily leggie got ready to bowl, he was seen accidentally applying saliva on the ball. The umpires took note of this and gave him a warning and also sanitized the ball later. It is noteworthy that fans had spotted Mishra doing the same thing in DC’s previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as well, but the umpires did not notice it.

It was the first warning for Mishra, so there was no penalty as such. Had the spinner committed the same again, a 5-run penalty would have been imposed on his side.

DC’s next match is against Kolkata Knight Riders tomorrow.
