No doubt IPL auctions are known to give surprises as many deserving are traded at low prices while some not-so-compelling players get inflated prices. The same situation was seen in the just-concluded 2021 VIVO IPL Auction on Thursday.

In the heat of the bid and to consolidate upon their respective squads completely, franchises ended up paying even 16.25 crores in the mini-auction to acquire players in their squad. The bidding war among the franchises concluded with these as the top five buys.

Chris Morris (sold to RR for 16.25 cr), Kyle Jamieson (sold to RCB for 15 cr), Glenn Maxwell (sold to RCB for 14.21 cr), Jhye Richardson (sold to Punjab Kings for 14 cr) and Krishnappa Gowtham (sold to CSK for 9.25 cr).

Among the top five buys, all the players are primarily bowlers (except) Maxwell, and this left some reputed batsmen with itching hearts for not getting the high prices.

Sam Billings, Dinesh Karthik lament for not being a bowler

England’s star batsmen Sam Billings was trolled by his girlfriend- Sarah for not being a bowler as he was traded to Delhi Capitals (DC) at the base price of 2 crores. With batsmen inviting not-so-lucrative prices, the former opened up on Twitter on the same.

Similarly, prolific Indian player Dinesh Karthik, who was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders, also expressed a similar regret via his Tweet. His Tweet mentioned the dichotomy where his mother insisted Karthik on being a fast bowler while his father wanted him to be a batsman. With bowlers cracking high prices in the auctions, even Karthik mockingly acknowledged his preference of being a bowler.
