IPL 2021: ‘These are very much chaseable targets’ – David Warner reflects on Sunrisers Hyderabad’s ‘disappointing’ third loss on the trot

Mumbai Indians (MI) rise to the top of the points table with a second win in a row. The defending champions handed Sunrisers Hyderabad their third straight defeat as they sealed the game by 13 runs. Having won the toss, MI chose to bat first and the decision paid off as teams chasing in Chepauk yet again fail to close off the game.

SRH skipper David Warner is mighty dissapointed with his side’s performance. Warner and Jonny Bairstow gave SRH a great start as they stormed to fifty in the powerplay. But everything fell apart as Bairstow stepped on his wickets before Warner was run out by a brilliant throw from Hardik Pandya. Some unfortunate dismissals along with couple of run outs was the tale of the Sunrisers innings.

I don’t know how to take that. Obviously disappointing. Two of us were set but it proves that if you don’t bat deep, you can’t win. That was my game-plan, a great piece of fielding from Hardik though. But that’s the game of cricket,” Warner said following the game.

“Williamson is coming along nicely,” David Warner

David Warner asserts that the matches they lost were definitely in their grasp. He feels that partnerships are crucial on a slow pitch like the one in Chennai. Warner adds that the players have to keep their spirits up and learn from their mistakes. The Aussie shared that Kane Williamson is recovering well and is playing an active role in the side.

These are very much chaseable targets, if you get a partnership and if there is one person at the end, you can chase it down. The guys need to play smart cricket in the middle, the bowlers have been fantastic and this wicket was slower than the previous wickets that we have played.

You gotta learn from mistakes and it’s our responsibility at the top to bat deep. The bowlers adapted well. We have to move forward and keep having smiles on our faces. We have to speak to the physios, he’s (Williamson) coming along nicely and plays a big role in our squad,” Warner adds.

The Mumbai bowlers were impressive on a sluggish Chennai pitch as they yet again defended a modest total with ease. Trent Boult and Rahul Chahar lead in the wickets’ column with four and three scalps each. Jasprit Bumrah was phenomenal with the ball too as he conceded only 14 runs while bagging a wicket.
