IPL 2021: Devdutt Padikkal tests positive for COVID-19

Devdutt Padikkal

Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal has been the latest addition to the list of player who have tested positive for COVID-19. A TOI report suggests that Padikkal tested positive for the virus on Sunday. The RCB opener has been isolated from the rest of the squad and is in quarantine.

The 20-year-old batsman was terrific for his domestic side Karnataka in the recently-concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy. He ended as the second-highest run-getter with 737 runs to his name in 7 matches at an average of 147.40. The positive result has put his chances of playing the season opener in serious jeopardy.

Padikkal was the highest run-getter for RCB in the last season. He finished with 473 runs in his maiden season at an average of 31. The Karnataka batsman’s absence will be a huge blow for RCB who lacks genuine Indian openers in the lineup.

Delhi Capitals’ Axar Patel has also contracted the virus. The development was confirmed by reports from ANI and the 27-year-old is currently in isolation and following all protocols necessary.

Sources from the DC camp spoke to ANI and confirmed the news saying, “Unfortunately, Axar has tested positive. He is isolating and all protocols are being followed.”

Axar featured in 15 matches for DC last season and amassed 117 runs while picking up 9 wickets. He chipped in for the DC bowling attack at crucial stages with his tight bowling as he had an economy of just 6.41. His absence will be a big blow for DC as he offers the side balance as a No. 7 batsman and a specialist spinner.
