The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been brought to an abrupt end after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to suspend the tournament due to COVID-19 cases breaching the teams’ bio-bubbles. With more than 5 cases being reported among personnel inside the bubble and with the situation in the country proving to be extremely dire, the board had no choice.
After the suspension, all focus has shifted to getting players back home safely. The BCCI has promised that it would do ‘everything in its powers’ to do so and as of now, they have been doing a good job. A huge chunk of the Englishmen and South Africans are already home while New Zealanders are set to leave soon. While the problem is with the Australians due to the travel ban in the country, plans are being put in place to shift players to Sri Lanka or Maldives before getting them home.
MS Dhoni informs teammates that he’ll return home last
According to reports in The Indian Express, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has informed his teammates that he will be the last person to go home. The former Indian captain has reportedly made it clear that he will wait for all him teammates and especially the overseas players to leave before he travels to Ranchi, his hometown from Delhi where the entire team is staying at the moment.
The decision was reportedly informed in a virtual meeting where the importance of ensuring foreigners’ safe return was stressed upon. “Mahibhai said that he will be the last person to leave the hotel. He wanted foreigners to leave first, then the Indian players. He will be taking the last flight tomorrow when everyone reaches their home safe and secure,” a CSK official told The Indian Express.
Meanwhile, CSK have organized a charter flight for all its players from Delhi. A flight carrying 10 players is set to travel to Rajkot and Mumbai today in the morning while in the evening, players from Bangalore and Chennai will be dropped off. Dhoni will fly home later in the evening. It is also worth noting that some players decided not to fly and rather, took cabs to nearby places.
Various other teams have also employed their own charter flights to get players back home. Mumbai Indians (MI) have also offered other franchises’ players to join in.
