Sri Lankan pacer and a veteran in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lasith Malinga has been released by the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise ahead of the auctions which are set to take place in mid-February.
MI had a terrific season in 2020 as they raced to the title. They were considered overwhelming favorites to win and they did so with ease by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final of the tournament after also beating them in the first qualifier. The side would now focus on plugging a few holes here and there and strengthening their bench to further bolster their attack in order to go on and win the title in 2021 as well.
Overseas pacers with the exception of Trent Boult released
Lasith Malinga was the hero for MI in the final of the 2019 IPL as his last-over heroics helped his side clinch a thrilling victory. In 2020 however, he pulled out in order to be with his ailing father in Sri Lanka. His absence wasn’t felt however, as the likes of Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, James Pattinson and Nathan Coulter-Nile delivered consistent performances.
Apart from Malinga, MI have also released Sherfane Rutherford and overseas pacers Mitchell McClenaghan, James Pattinson and Nathan Coulter-Nile. It is thus evident that MI will be on the lookout for at least one overseas pacer in the auction which is set to take place in 2021.
