The COVID-19 situation in India is getting worse by the day. With as many as 3 lakh positive cases and more being reported every day, a plethora of problems like the shortage of oxygen have arisen. This has led to an extremely dire situation in the nation. With all things coming to a standstill, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the only major sporting tournament which is being held in India.

Due to the uncertain nature of the situation in India, a few players featuring in the tournament have pulled out and left for home. Australians Andrew Tye (RR), Kane Richardson (RCB) and Adam Zampa (RCB) did so while India and Delhi Capitals Ravichandran Ashwin also decided to ‘take a break’ to be with his family after a few members of his extended family tested positive for the virus.

DC’s head coach Ricky Ponting spoke at a virtual conference about the situation in India and said, “It is a really strange feeling amongst our team right now. We are very aware of what’s happening outside and in India at the moment. Obviously, our hearts go out to every single person that’s struggling with Covid-19 in the Indian society. We have had our one player leave as well, Ravichandran Ashwin left to be with his family so that is affecting, we are talking about it more than most teams are.”

“There have been some other revelations that our government has taken regarding flights. There have been few distractions on the way, but the travel side of the things for us Australians is only a small issue, on daily basis we are thinking about what’s happening outside and we understand how blessed we are to be doing what we are doing. Hopefully, there are a number of people in India who got enjoyment by watching IPL cricket,” he added.

Ponting’s DC play their next match against Kolkata Knight Riders tomorrow.
