- Delhi Capitals face elimination unless a series of unlikely results occur, including a significant victory over Kolkata Knight Riders.
The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League has finally arrived at its business end. A fierce four-way battle among Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals has emerged for the last available spot in the top four.
Despite a heavy 55-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bengaluru still finished on top of the points table with 18 points, recording nine wins and five defeats. The defending champions will face off against the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 in Dharamshala on May 26. Finishing second with 18 points as well, the Titans also enjoyed a decent run, which ended with an 89-run win over the Chennai Super Kings.

SRH finished third on the table, concluding the IPL 2026 league stage with 18 points, marking a rare instance in which the top three teams all finished with the same points total. Despite this, the Orange Army failed to make it into the top two as a result of a lower Net Run Rate. Their NRR of +0.524 was lower than RCB’s +0.783 and GT’s +0.695. SRH will play in the Eliminator against the fourth-placed side.

With the IPL 2026 league stages nearing its end, three teams: Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Lucknow Super Giants, have already been eliminated. The focus is now on the qualification scenarios for the four remaining teams competing for the final playoff spot.
Rajasthan Royals
The Men in Pink currently sit on 14 points with an NRR of +0.083, and remain favorites to secure the final playoff berth. RR can attain 16 points, but it will require the 2008 champions to beat the Mumbai Indians in their final league stage clash to make it through easily. With no other team in the chasing pack to exceed 15 points, the Rajasthan Royals’ victory will help them qualify for the playoffs outright.

If RR loses to MI, they will remain at 14 points, making their qualification dependent on the outcomes of the remaining matches. To still qualify, they will need PBKS to lose to LSG, which would cap Punjab at 13 points. A defeat for RR will improve the chances for DC and KKR. However, Riyan Parag and Co. will prefer a DC victory because Delhi’s poor NRR would prevent them from surpassing RR in the race.
Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings’ season suffered a dramatic collapse after the IPL 2025 finalists started strong, winning six of their first seven matches. However, the franchise then lost its next six games. Now in fifth place, PBKS will rely on their healthy NRR of +0.227, which is better than KKR’s, the only other team with 13 points. This NRR advantage will be required if both PBKS and KKR win their remaining matches.

PBKS must beat LSG to reach 15 points. Their qualification hopes, however, depend on the result of MI’s clash against RR. If RR loses, they stay at 14 points, allowing a victorious Punjab, with 15 points, to advance. However, the KKR threat looms, and PBKS will have to win by a big margin to keep their NRR ahead of the Knights, who will also reach 15 points. A defeat to LSG will result in immediate elimination.
Kolkata Knight Riders
The three-time IPL champions bounced back late during the season, after losing five out of their six opening games. For the Knight Riders, in order to keep their campaign alive, they will require a slip-up from the two teams above them, RR and PBKS. KKR must defeat DC in their final match to reach 15 points. Should MI defeat RR, and LSG beat PBKS, the two teams will finish with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

However, if both KKR and PBKS win, both teams will be tied at 15 points. For Kolkata to make it through, they will need to beat DC by a massive margin to close out the NRR gap. A loss to DC, however, will eliminate the Knight Riders from IPL 2026 and could drop the team to 7th in the standings. They will have the advantage of playing at their home ground, the Eden Gardens.
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals making the playoffs this summer will be an almost impossible miracle after a campaign full of ups and downs. DC are currently placed eighth, with 12 points from 13 matches. The Capitals are only mathematically alive in the race to the playoffs. Even if DC wins against KKR to reach 14 points, a terrible NRR of -0.871 is the obstacle preventing the team from securing a top-four spot.

For DC to qualify with 14 points, an unlikely sequence of events will have to occur. First, RR will have to lose to MI by a huge margin. Second, PBKS will have to lose to the LSG. Finally, DC must secure a massive victory over KKR, likely by over 100 runs or chase the target in under 10 overs, to improve their disastrous NRR. Any defeat will result in DC’s elimination, keeping them at 8th place.
