Islam Makhachev has built his career by keeping training camps and public appearances private before major fights. Rare media appearances remain the exception for the reigning champion. His UFC 330 opponent, Ian Garry, takes the opposite approach, often drawing scrutiny for his personality and interviews. Days before their welterweight title clash, Makhachev addressed that contrast for one of the few times.

Garry has often divided opinion through outspoken interviews and a measured fighting style many fans consider uneventful. The Irish welterweight has also remained at the center of widespread online controversy after false narratives involving his wife spread across social media.

Makhachev rarely makes public appearances and keeps his personal life private. The champion is usually seen training alongside Khabib Nurmagomedov and his Dagestani camp. As Garry’s personal life again drew attention after claims from a man identifying as his brother, Makhachev responded with a hilarious message.

I  saw his couple of interviews. Honestly, he looks very bad in this interview. Better for him training more and do less interview. It looks like somebody in the house control him and say, ‘Tell him what to say in the interview.’ He look very bad in the interview… In the fight week, he always try to act like bad guy.

The latest controversy followed Garry’s appearance on the High Performance podcast, where he discussed his childhood. A man claiming to be his brother publicly disputed those accounts and criticized Garry on social media. The exchange quickly reignited scrutiny surrounding the Irish contender before UFC 330.

The account also disputed Garry’s claim that his wife Layla Anna-Lee was his earliest supporter, alleging his family backed him long before. It further claimed the Irish welterweight contender missed his grandfather’s funeral. Garry has not responded publicly, and the account’s identity remains unverified.

Garry’s wife, Layla Anna-Lee, faced renewed scrutiny after fans resurfaced her past book about relationships and attracting successful sportspersons. The attention added to the criticism that has followed Garry throughout his UFC career, from his outspoken persona to repeated controversies outside the Octagon.

Makhachev is not the only figure to criticize Garry, as his public image has drawn attention from others in MMA. Ali Abdelaziz also questioned the Irishman’s signing with Eddie Hearn‘s Matchroom Talent Agency. He pointed to the controversy involving a man claiming to be Garry’s brother as a potential failure in managing his image.

Makhachev remains confident ahead of his UFC 330 title defense and does not view Garry as a major threat. For the Irish star, the fight is the biggest opportunity of his career, requiring ‘The Future’ to prove himself inside the Octagon while handling the attention surrounding his public image.

Islam Makhachev gets candid about what is driving him ahead of UFC 330

Recent UFC events have seen dominant fighters and fan favorites suffer unexpected losses. The trend began at UFC 328 when Sean Strickland shocked the MMA world by handing Khamzat Chimaev his first professional defeat. The upset ended the Chechen star’s dominant undefeated run.

Another major upset came at UFC Freedom 250 when Justin Gaethje brutally stopped Ilia Topuria. The Spaniard entered the contest undefeated and as a former two-division champion. Topuria had also scored knockout wins over elite names like Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway before suffering his first loss.

Islam Makhachev enters UFC 330 as a two-division champion riding a 16-fight winning streak. The champion is one victory away from matching Anderson Silva‘s legendary UFC win streak. However, Garry presents a younger challenge, with Makhachev recently discussing the need to remain focused after recent major upsets.

We talked inside the team about the guys who lost. Maybe some of them lost focus, or maybe some of them were not training, but our gym doesn’t work like that. We always train hard, more than everybody. No matter if you’re a champion or not, inside the gym we are all the same, and all the coaches push us very hard.

While Makhachev draws lessons from Chimaev and Topuria’s losses, Garry enters UFC 330 seeking a career-defining upset. ‘The Future’ has taken inspiration from Strickland and Gaethje’s victories. The fight gives the reigning champion a chance to protect his legacy, while the challenger aims for the biggest win of his career.
