Islam Makhachev is one of the most dominant UFC champions, currently holding a 15-fight win streak. He also holds the position of the pound-for-pound number one. His impressive performances and skillset continue to cement his legacy in mixed martial arts history. On paper, he stands as the most successful lightweight in UFC history, with veteran Frankie Edgar acknowledging his greatness.

Makhachev won the UFC lightweight title at UFC 280 by submitting the most dangerous submission artist in a dominant performance. Since then, he has defended his title four times, finishing most opponents with elite grappling and striking skills. In a recent interview, UFC veteran Frankie Edgar was asked about the lightweight GOAT, naming Makhachev as his choice.

Khabib’s up there, BJ’s up there. I mean, if Islam continues on the path that he does, you gotta give it to him. He’s not just defending the title, he’s finishing guys. So he probably takes the cake.

Khabib Nurmagomedov retired undefeated as the UFC lightweight champion, dominating every opponent with relentless grappling and unmatched mental strength. BJ Penn, a former two-division champion, showcased elite BJJ and striking, making history as one of the most talented fighters ever. Both fighters left an unforgettable legacy, influencing future generations and defining greatness in mixed martial arts history.

Edgar himself is a UFC lightweight legend and a former champion and has fought some of the biggest fighters. He is actually the favorite fighter of Islam Makhachev and the mutual respect between both fighters remain impeccable. Nevertheless, the Dagestani has some new challenges ahead of him, which need to be dealt with.

Ilia Topuria vacated his featherweight title to move up and challenge Islam Makhachev, believing he could defeat the lightweight champion. Topuria has repeatedly called out Makhachev, but the champion’s camp seems hesitant about an immediate fight against the rising contender. According to the Dagestani, the Georgian-Spanish star needs to prove himself first before fighting for the title.

Despite the uncertainty, the rivalry has intensified through social media, with both fighters exchanging bold statements and challenges. The fan base is divided with many wanting his mega fight and others siding with Makhachev. Given the confusion, UFC veteran Ben Askren shared his suggestion for CEO Dana White‘s next move.

I think Dana should just do Dana stuff and just say, ‘Hey, Islam, if you don’t want to fight, you’re stripped.’ He’s done that. That is in Dana’s repertoire. If you’re the champion, you’re supposed to defend the belt against the best person, right? So Ilia has beaten two legends in a row. Not only beat them, but finished them.

Topuria vs. Makhachev would be a high-stakes battle pitting Topuria’s explosive striking against Makhachev’s elite wrestling and submission skills. Makhachev, with his lethal takedowns and relentless grappling, can control and exhaust Topuria over multiple rounds. On the other hand, Topuria’s best chance would be early, utilizing his speed, boxing, and power to land a knockout shot.

Can Islam Makhachev become a double champion?

Islam Makhachev has often expressed interest in moving up, aiming to become a UFC double champion and cement his legacy. He believes his grappling, striking, and fight IQ would allow him to dominate the welterweight division. If successful, he would join an elite list of fighters like Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, and others who have held titles in two divisions.

However, his plans to move up were halted when his friend and training partner, Belal Muhammad, won the welterweight title. Makhachev still has a chance in the future, but he must wait for the right opportunities. For now, defending his lightweight belt longer before a welterweight title shot becomes available again seems to be the best option.
