Italian Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri has discussed the return of Jannik Sinner in May. The World No. 1 is set to make his much-awaited comeback on May 4th, the day his three-month suspension ends.
Volandri, who has captained Italy to back-to-back Davis Cup wins, claims that Sinner can’t wait to be back on the court. He said that he is constantly receiving updates from Sinner’s coaches about his eagerness to return.
Last week, I had dinner with Vagnozzi, Jannik’s coach, and he told me that he sees Sinner extremely motivated for his comeback, completely focused on the upcoming tournaments with a lot of mental calmness. It is essential to remember that, for an athlete, the adrenaline of competition is irreplaceable because nothing simulates game conditions. Therefore, I do not expect a winning streak upon his return. That would not be human, but undoubtedly, the more matches he plays, the closer he will be to the ideal form for Paris.
Filippo Volandri said in an interview to Gazzetta
Amazingly, Sinner has not lost a match since October last year. His last defeat came at the China Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in three sets. Since then, the Italian has won titles at the ATP Finals and the Australian Open this year.
Sinner has lost many points during his three-month suspension, especially at the Miami Open, where he would have entered as the defending champion. However, he has time to increase his lead at the top, as he has fewer points to defend until the end of Wimbledon.
Carlos Alcaraz beats Jannik Sinner in a special milestone
Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has said he felt extra pressure after Jannik Sinner was banned for three months. He believes that pressure may have slowed his rise to the top of the ATP Race rankings.

Alcaraz’s big win at the Monte Carlo Masters helped him move back up to No. 2 in the ATP Rankings. It also pushed him ahead of Sinner in the 2025 points race.
The ATP Rankings are based on results from the past 52 weeks. But the ATP Race only counts matches from the current year. Sinner had stayed at No. 1 in the Race until last week, even though he only played one event.
Sinner earned 2,000 points from winning the Australian Open. That kept him ahead for months. But now, after Monte Carlo, Alcaraz has passed him with 2,410 points and taken the lead in the 2025 Race.
Jannik Sinner set to resume training
World No.1 Jannik Sinner is getting ready to return to tennis and has chosen a top training partner to help him prepare. After serving a three-month ban (set to end in a few weeks), he is now allowed to train and compete again.

Sinner was banned after two failed drug tests in March 2024. He couldn’t play against the Pros until April 13. That same day, Carlos Alcaraz won the Monte Carlo Masters. Now, Sinner is focused on getting back in form for the Italian Open next month.
To help with his return, Sinner will train with fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini. They are practicing at the Monte Carlo Country Club, where Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill, is also working with him.
Berrettini recently pulled out of the Munich tournament. He may have chosen to train with Sinner instead. The two are good friends and teamed up last year to help Italy win the Davis Cup.
