I’m sorry my love, I’m so sorry. Too much water, too many kilograms lost over the last few months and maybe the uncontrollable enthusiasm of what we were doing. Probably all three things. I followed it until I saw it bounce inside the boat. But the rebound went in the wrong direction unfortunately. If it had to happen, if I really had to lose this ring, I couldn’t imagine a better place. It will remain forever on the riverbed in the City of Love.

His wife, Chiara responded saying that only he was capable of turning this into something romantic. Tamberi has always been a vibrant character and his half-shaven beard has always had the world talking. In fact, he once said that his style has been solely for entertainment which definitely left the world in a bit of titter-tatter.

In the last competition ahead of the Rio Olympic Games at the Monaco Diamond League meeting, Tamberi tore his ligament which forced him to be a part of the Olympics. Following that day, Barshim walked up to his room and offered him consolation and unwavering support. A year later, the roles reversed as the latter suffered an exact same injury ahead of the World Athletics Championship at Doha. The two elite athletes had each other’s back in the darkest days of their career.

The friendship had its culminating moment when two of the best buddies were locked at a tie for a jump-off in the final of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. When the official approached Barshim, asking him whether they are willing to push it to the jump-off, the latter responded by asking whether two gold medals could have been shared. The rest as they say was history.
