In a conversation with the South China Morning Post, Lorenzo Musetti warned about the danger posed by Novak Djokovic, albeit the latter being in his twilight years. Musetti believes that it would be a big mistake to write off Djokovicโs prospects of adding to his record 24 Grand Slam titles.
In 2024, Novak Djokovic, aged 37, failed to win a Grand Slam in a calendar year for the first time since 2017. Djokovic only won the Olympic gold. As a result, the Serb has dropped to World No. 7 ahead of this monthโs Australian Open, where he is a record 10-time champion. His ‘Big 3’ rivalsโRoger Federer and Rafael Nadal have also retired.
Novak will always be [competing for grand Slams], if his physical condition is stable. He is a danger for everybodyโfor Jannik, for Sasha, and for Carlos Alcaraz. Last year, Jannik showed he was one step ahead of everyone else, he had such an incredible season. But Novak is always dangerous, and he knows a little bit about how to play on those Grand Slam courts and in those conditions.

Lorenzo Musetti also spoke of his Italian compatriot Jannik Sinner. Musetti reckoned that Jannik Sinner had advanced โone step ahead of everybody else” during a supremely successful but controversial 2024. Sinner ended the 2024 season with a World No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career.
Sinner secured his first Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. He became the first Italian man to win a major in 48 years. His consistent performance also included victories at the Miami Open and the ATP Finals. However, Sinner’s season was marred by a doping controversy wherein he tested positive for clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid, in March.
Lorenzo Musetti looked back on his 2024 season
Speaking about his 2024 season, Lorenzo Musetti stated that his feats that year had breathed new life into his own major ambitions. The 22-year-old tennis player remarked that winning the Olympic bronze medal was a nice feeling for him and his country. The last time an Italian man won an Olympic tennis medal was 100 years ago when Uberto De Morpurgo won the 1924 Olympic bronze medal.

Musetti had a breakthrough performance at the 2024 Wimbledon, reaching his first Grand Slam semifinal. In the semifinals, he was defeated by the very player whose danger he now cautions ofโNovak Djokovic. His best Australian Open result is the second round, and he believes that he will do better this year. He expressed the confidence to achieve his goal of going to the second week of every Slam.
Lorenzo Musetti admitted to feeling that he had unfinished business in Hong Kong and in many other tournaments. The 2024 year-end World No. 17 reached a lot of finals last season where he failed to clinch a title.
