No.1-seed Simona Halep will start her proceedings against local favourite Jasmine Paolini in a Round of 32 contest in the Italian Open 2020. Halep did not travel to America and hence did not participate in the Cincinnati Open and the US Open, so it will be her first tournament in almost a month.
Talking about the performance so far in the WTA Premier 5 event, Halep got a first-round bye and hence, it will be her first match in Rome this year. The 28-year old Romanian, though, is in sublime touch as she won her first tournament itself after the season restarted, defeating Elise Mertens in the final to emerge victorious at the Prague Open.
On the other hand, Jasmine Paolini stunned her higher ranked opponent in the first round. The 24-year old Italian outclassed Anastasija Sevastova 6-2, 6-3 to set up a date with two-time Grand Slam champion.
