Jannik Sinner has continued to exceed expectations at the Italian Open and has grown in confidence on the clay court. The World No.1 has played great tennis in his last two matches, particularly against Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals. He will now face Carlos Alcaraz in the final and has a great opportunity of winning a title in his first tournament on return from suspension.

Alcaraz has continued to perform at an optimal level on the clay court this season. Since the start of the clay swing, he has lost just one match and has been to three finals. He seems to be enjoying the conditions of the surface and will aim to win his second clay title of the season and third tour-level title this year.

Jannik Sinner vs. Carlos Alcaraz: Match Preview

Jannik Sinner returned from his three-month suspension without much expectation at the Italian Open. He had not played a competitive match since the Australian Open final in January. But in Rome, he has adapted to the challenge perfectly. He defeated Mariano Navone and Jesper De Jong in straight sets in the early rounds at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

Sinner, the top seed at the tournament, has shown just a very few signs of rust. In fact, he overcame his first major test in Rome by beating Francisco Cerundolo 7-6(2), 6-3 in the fourth round and then ousted Casper Ruud 6-0, 6-1 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, he came from behind to beat Tommy Paul 1-6, 6-0, 6-3, which was his 12th consecutive win this season.

On the other hand, Alcaraz has done well to bounce back from his final loss in Barcelona against Holger Rune and the injury he sustained in the process. He was forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open due to the adductor injury, but has been in scintillating form in Rome.

He has only dropped one set in the tournament so far, and that was against Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. He showed that he’s a level above the rest of the ATP players on clay after beating Jack Draper and Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets.

Both opponents have been in remarkable form on clay this season. It is his third clay final of the year, and he has won the Monte Carlo Masters, while losing the Barcelona title.

Jannik Sinner vs. Carlos Alcaraz: Match Prediction

Jannik Sinner began the tournament by showing some signs of rust in his serves. In his first two opening matches, he wasted quite a few breakpoints, but still managed to win the matches. However, as the tournament progressed he began to get better and was more ruthless with his big serves and groundstrokes.

Alcaraz has continued to play his usual drop shots and forehand spin that have caused problems for his opponents. He has also shown off his athleticism on the court, and his movement has been masterclass. However, he’s slightly prone to losing focus at the beginning of a set despite always finding a way to win matches.

He holds a 6-4 lead over Sinner in their head-to-head record and has won their last three meetings on tour. But their meetings have always been high-level tennis, with a lot of drama. The Italian Open final will not be an exception, and with Alcaraz’s current clay form, he has a greater chance of beating the US Open winner.

Match prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
