The President of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi has revealed that Jannik Sinner is the driving force of his entire generation in men’s tennis. This comes after the 23-year-old continues to make history on the tour and win titles on the court, reaching new heights in his career since the 2024 season.

During an interview with Sky Sports Italia, Angelo Binaghi was asked about Sinner’s recent victory at the Wimbledon Championship. The ITF president revealed the World No.1 has been the envy of the world and has improved the image of Italian tennis abroad:

In addition to being an extraordinary champion that the whole world envies us, Jannik transmits a positive example and improves the image of Italy abroad. He is a boy of humble origins from a family of sound principles, which taught him the right values. When he gets a huge win, his first thought is to go back to work to improve even more. He has become the driving force behind an entire generation of young talent.

Sinner was the best player last year and held a 73-6 win-loss record, which gave him an excellent 92 percent win on the court. Three of the six losses last year came against Carlos Alcaraz, who’s his arch-rival on tour. He became the World No.1 for the first time last year and won his maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open.

He finished the year with the highest number of titles (8), winning three Masters 1000 titles and the ATP Finals in Turin. This season, he continued from where he stopped in 2024, winning the Australian Open for the second consecutive time. But he then served a three-month suspension for testing positive for clostebol in March last year.

Back on the court in May, he played as though he had never been suspended. The Italian star reached the final of his first tournament back from suspension, but lost the Rome Masters title to Alcaraz. He suffered the same fate at the Roland Garros final just a month later, but earned his revenge at the Wimbledon Championship to win his fourth career Grand Slam.

Sinner has now spent 60 weeks as World No.1. Since climbing to the position in May last year, the Italian star has tightened his grip on it. Despite being absent for three months due to a doping ban, he was never toppled by any player during that period. He’s now the 12th player with the most weeks at the top, ahead of Jim Courier and British legend Andy Murray.

Jannik Sinner arrives at the Cincinnati Open ahead of his title defense

It will be his first North American hard-court tournament and he holds a 26-3 win-loss record on tour this season. Also, he’s yet to win a Masters 1000 title this season as he missed out of several of them due to his doping suspension. He has only played one ATP 1000 event and that came at the Italian Open in May.

Sinner will lead the men’s circuit draw, with his arch-rival Alcaraz expected to compete at the event. Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, and other ATP stars are also going to feature at the Cincinnati Open. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper’s appearance at the tournament is still unknown.

The Cincinnati Open will kick off on Thursday (August 7), the same day that the Canadian Open will end. The tournament will run for two weeks and will feature 96 players in the men’s circuit. The tournament expansion coincides with the $260 million campus renovation that is expected to enhance both players’ and fans’ experience.
