Jack Draper is trying his best to gain complete fitness, but his efforts so far have gone in vain. The persistent left arm injury is not only stopping him from giving his best, but also forcing him to skip tournaments one after another. Draper has been dealing with a bruised humerus.

Draper played both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, but he couldn’t go beyond the first round. In Montreal, his run was ended by Terence Atmane, while in Cincinnati, Martin Landaluce defeated him.

In Montreal, Draper broke down in tears during the match. Before starting his campaign in Cincinnati, the Brit talked about that emotional reaction in an interview with The Guardian.

I was emotional because I didn’t recognize the player I was out on the court due to my injuries and due to probably the way I’ve been feeling for a long time.

Draper, it seems, has deactivated his Instagram account, as the link to his account is not loading. He had over 500,000 followers.

When you reach rock bottom like that, you can come back up again. Since then, I’ve practiced really well, I’ve had amazing support from the people around me, and you get to a point more and more of acceptance. We’ve definitely reached that acceptance phase now.

Draper skipped the first three Majors of the season. And now, his participation at the US Open is uncertain. It was in the New York Major back in 2024 that Draper produced his best Grand Slam performance. He reached the semifinals and lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

He has so far played seven tournaments this season and produced his best performance at the Eastbourne International, where he reached the semifinals and lost to Ugo Humbert. At the Indian Wells Masters, where he competed as the defending champion, Draper beat 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the fourth round.

Injury expert Stephen Smith on Jack Draper’s injury

Stephen Smith, a leading injury prevention and athlete welfare expert, discussed Jack Draper‘s injury woes during his interview with Tennis365. He was asked whether a bone bruising injury commonly takes a long time to heal.

I wouldn’t say it’s uncommon. What we saw at the Canadian Open was genuinely difficult to watch. He’s been navigating that bone bruising injury in his left arm for a significant period, and bone bruising is notoriously slow to resolve. What would happen if you keep overloading that is it could end up resulting in a stress fracture, as well.

Stephen Smith said

Smith thinks remaining on the sidelines to rest is not the solution, as he has already missed several months.

Even rest alone doesn’t solve these things. Okay, the symptoms might resolve, but then you go straight back out there, and you go from 0 to 100 miles an hour in terms of the demands that are placed on you — and that’s what’s causing some of this. There needs to be a steady physiological base that’s there. It’s not just about load management; it’s actually about that interaction between load and response.

In Cincinnati, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz is also not competing because of a wrist injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open. Last year’s runner-up Jannik Sinner is dealing with a knee injury and skipped the tournament. He also withdrew from the Canadian Open to rest and recover after his Wimbledon title defense.

Their participation at the US Open is now uncertain. Alcaraz beat Sinner last year, stopping him from defending his title.
