At present, Jack Draper is nursing an arm injury that forced him to skip the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open. He was last seen in action at Wimbledon, where his run was ended by Marin Cilic in the second round.
The Cincinnati Masters is underway. Last year, he made it to the quarterfinals here for the first time, losing the match to Holger Rune.
While he is on the sidelines managing the injury, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have started their bid for the Cincinnati title with both booking spots in the fourth round. Sinner and Alcaraz have won the last seven Majors, while Draper’s best performance in Majors came in 2024 when he reached the semifinals and lost to eventual winner Sinner.
Draper has to achieve a lot to reach Sinner and Alcaraz’s level. During an interview with LTA, Draper has made it clear that he won’t be sitting quietly and see the top two players win titles one after the other.
Jannik and Carlos are currently the two best players in the world. Their tennis is very exciting to watch; it’s electrifying. Their game is flawless; they are very consistent and powerful. Mentally, they both have a lot of experience on the big courts, and they are complete players.
Draper trails 2-4 in the head-to-head matchups against the five-time Grand Slam champion, and also beat him in this year’s Indian Wells semifinals before winning the title. Against the World No.1, Draper has won one and lost one match.
That said, they can still improve, so it’s very motivating to be alongside them. They are leading the way, but there are players like me who are hungry to surpass their level and are ready to do anything to reach their level. I look forward to facing them again in many matches to come.

But at present, the Brit will only be hoping to recover before the US Open. He has lifted just one title this season – the Indian Wells.
Vincenzo Santopadre backs Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton to trouble Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner will enter the US Open as the defending champion. Last year, after beating Taylor Fritz, he lifted his career’s second Grand Slam title.

Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, suffered a shocking second-round exit at Flushing Meadows last year, but at the US Open back in 2022, he lifted his career’s first Grand Slam title. Vincenzo Santopadre, the former coach of Matteo Berrettini, said during an interview with OA Sport that he thinks Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton could trouble the two young Grand Slam champions.
You could think of Fritz, given how he arrived last year, who has learned to play well even at home, the Shelton of the moment. They could be a nuisance. That’s what comes to mind.
Shelton has yet to claim a major in his career. Only twice he was successful in reaching the semi-finals – at the 2023 US Open and this year’s Australian Open. It was Sinner who ended his run in Melbourne before he reached the final and breezed past World No. 3 Alexander Zverev to defend his title.
All of these players are currently participating in the Cincinnati Masters. Sinner is playing as the defending champion. Last year, the four-time Grand Slam champion defeated home favourite Frances Tiafoe. Alcaraz came close to winning the title in 2023 as he reached the final but couldn’t cross the final hurdle in the form of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Fritz will be locking horns with Terence Atmane, while Shelton has scheduled his third-round match against Roberto Bautista Agut. If Sinner wins the Cincinnati Masters, he will defend a Masters 1000 title for the first time in his career and will also become the first man after Roger Federer (2014 and 2015) to defend the Cincinnati title.
