Former Masters 1000 winner Jack Sock has questioned the short-lived partnership between Holger Rune and Andre Agassi. Rune has been focused on reshaping his team this summer, with fitness coach Marco Panichi set to join during the Cincinnati Open officially.
Agassi was seen training with Rune ahead of the Citi Open in Washington. The collaboration caught attention due to Agassi’s iconic status in the sport and Rune’s rising profile. Sock said on Nothing Major podcast:
I don’t understand why players do this [take coaches on for a short trial]. What’s a three-day trial going to achieve? Players always do this, as if they want to try it out. Maybe they were together these last two weeks, when Holger left Wimbledon, and maybe he worked with him here.
Rune revealed that he first contacted Agassi several months ago. Their conversations eventually led to a brief training period during the Washington event. Despite the limited time, Rune has shown interest in working with Agassi again. The 22-year-old has not ruled out a future reunion and appears open to exploring it further.
Holger Rune withdraws from Washington
Holger Rune has pulled out of the Mubadala Citi DC Open due to lower back pain. The Danish player was expected to be the third seed at the ATP 500 hard-court event in Washington, D.C.

With Rune’s withdrawal, Corentin Moutet has entered the main draw as a lucky loser. Moutet will now face fellow Frenchman Alexandre Muller in the second round of the tournament.
Rune recently suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon. The early loss was a setback in what has been an up-and-down season for the young star.
In the lead-up to the Washington event, Rune had been spotted training with former tennis legend Andre Agassi. Their time together had sparked interest, but Rune’s injury has delayed any chance to see results from that partnership.
Holger Rune makes major adjustment to his camp
Danish star Holger Rune has added a new member to his team following recent guidance from tennis legend Andre Agassi. The Danish star has brought on fitness coach Marco Panichi ahead of the US Open. Panichi is well known for his long-time partnership with Novak Djokovic, which ended in 2024.

After parting ways with Djokovic, Panichi briefly joined Jannik Sinner’s team. However, he and physiotherapist Ulises Badio were let go before Wimbledon 2025, as Sinner wanted a new direction. Now, Panichi will begin working with Rune starting at the Cincinnati Masters next month.
The new partnership does not affect the role of Rune’s current coach, Lars Christensen, who remains in place. The move signals Rune’s continued focus on improving his game and physical condition as the hard-court season picks up.
Rune has not publicly spoken about the hiring, but recently shared his ambition to reach the top of the ATP Tour in an interview with tennis.com. He currently holds five ATP titles and has made three Grand Slam quarter-final appearances—twice in Paris and once at Wimbledon.
