In Short

It was a tough pill to swallow for Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks after their closely fought game against the Atlanta Hawks. In a series that the Knicks were considered to be heavy favorites, they now find themselves 2-1 down after a 109-108 loss to the Hawks at the State Farm Arena on Thursday night.

After the match, Brunson cut a dejected figure while speaking to the media.

Wish I had a better answer for you. I got nothing right now.

The Knicks have been through some ups and downs this year. They won the 2025 NBA Cup but went through a rough patch since the turn of the year. However, they were still deemed as one of the favorites to come out of the East after their Eastern Conference Finals appearance last year.

But the Knicks find themselves in a spot of bother at the moment after their loss in Game 3. Jalen Brunson has been the team’s leader since joining in 2022. In his four seasons with the Knicks, he has become a fan favorite in the city.

However, despite his impressive performances and leading the team to a Conference Finals, many doubt that he can lead a team to a championship. Being the number one option as a small guard makes it really difficult for a team to go all the way. To add to it, the Knicks lack a strong secondary scoring option even with Karl-Anthony Towns in the lineup, which just makes them even more reliant on Brunson.

Jalen Brunson had two possessions to win Game 3

Jalen Brunson looking broken in the press conference is understandable. However, the Knicks guard did have a good game. He scored 26 points to go along with three rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a little over 40 minutes of playing time.

In the final 16 seconds of the game, the Knicks had two opportunities to seal the game. In the first possession, Brunson missed a midrange jumper, and in the final sequence of the game, he was guilty of turning the ball over as he was stuck at the baseline and tried to pass the ball to a teammate.

It is a loss that could take a negative toll on the Knicks mentally. The game was theirs for the taking. They will need to rejuvenate themselves as they have just one gap day before game four. It is a must-win game for the Knicks, or they risk being 3-1 down before heading to MSG.

Mike Brown remains optimistic heading into game four

There is still a lot to play for in this series, but the Hawks will fancy their chances heading into game four. They have won the last two games by just one point. While fingers will be pointed at Jalen Brunson for his turnover, Mikal Bridges will be on the receiving end of some criticism as well. He did not score a single point and only attempted three shots in 20 minutes.

Following the loss, head coach Mike Brown wasn’t too worried about being 2-1 down in the series.

I told them this: It’s a 7-game series for a reason. Stuff’s gonna happen. Plenty of teams have been down 1-2. Sh*t I even think OKC was down 1-2 last year and they ended up winning it––I’m not saying we’re gonna win it or anything like that.

The Hawks have home-court advantage now. With game four set to be played in Atlanta, the pressure will be on the Knicks to deliver on Saturday.
