Only winner of this match is Liverpool

Leicester and Manchester United both had opportunities to close the gap with league leader Liverpool today. Manchester United had more purpose to do so as they had a match in hand over Liverpool to further close the gap. As a result it was Manchester United who started brightly but Leicester quickly took over possession.

Marcus Rashford missed a sitter right in the second minute when Bruno Fernandes’s lofted ball found him in front of an empty net. The England striker winger could only put the ball over the crossbar and Leicester survived early there.  Leicester took over possession from there but it never threatened Manchester United as they were good without the ball too. True to their nature they were the ones who struck first.

For all the possession Leicester had, they couldn’t put the ball in the net and it came back to bite them. Marcus Rashford made amends for his 2nd minute miss and scored in the 23rd minute. Daniel James sets up Bruno Fernandes who in turn sets up Marcus Rashford with a small touch. Rashford did the rest as he put the ball past Kasper Schmeichel. However that lead didn’t last long as Leicester’s Harvey Barnes scored a goal with a powerful shot past David De Gea.

It has become a staple for Bruno Fernandes to lose possession in dangerous performances and put his team under pressure. It happened again as Fernandes was robbed off possession in midfield and Harvey Barnes put the ball in the net with a powerful shot. The match ended on equal terms for the first half and Manchester United made a host of changes. Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba made their appearances while Axel Tuanzebe came on later.

Edinson Cavani took his time and finally made an impact as he sent a beautiful throughball to Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder made sure to not miss the chance and put Manchester United into the lead. However just like before, Leicester came up trumps and scored within the next 6 minutes.

Ayoze Perez came on in the 79th minute and made an instant impact as he put in an assist for Jamie Vardy. The latter had been kept quiet throughout the match and finally came alive when his team needed it most. This was a goal to celebrate for him as he finally was released from his shackles and made the impact which he is usually known for.

In the end it was Liverpool who benefitted the most as both the teams didn’t make much progress. If Liverpool are able to beat West Bromwich Albion tomorrow, the lead at the top will become six points for the red side of Merseyside.
