Jannik Sinner has set this eyes on the Australian Open, which he aims to win for the second time in a row. But he’s also aware of the huge threat in the form of Carlos Alcaraz, who is bidding to complete his Career Grand Slam.

Alcaraz has won four Grand Slam titles already (two Wimbledon, one French Open, and one US Open), and the missing Major in his trophy cabinet is the Australian Open which he wants to clinch in the ongoing tournament. Last year, he and Sinner split the four Majors between them.

If Alcaraz wins the Melbourne Major, he will become the youngest man to accomplish the Career Grand Slam. Sinner, following his straight-set win over Nicolas Jarry in the first round on Monday, made his feelings known about Alcaraz’s Career Grand Slam ambition.

Yeah (laughs). It’s…I understand him. I know what’s missing to him, the Career Grand Slam. There are many others who also want this. So, let’s see. You never know. Two weeks are very long. He’s always trying to be as positive as possible in tough moments. And then we’ll see.

Jannik Sinner told ESPN

While Jarry challenged Sinner in the first two sets, which stretched to the tie-breaks, Alcaraz breezed past his first-round opponent Alexander Shevchenko and is set to lock horns with Yoshihito Nishioka.

Alcaraz has never progressed to the semifinals of the Australian Open, and last year, he was eliminated after defeat to finalist Daniil Medvedev in the last eight.

After his first-round win, Jannik Sinner joined Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic to become the fourth man to win 15 consecutive hard-court matches in Grand Slam events since 2000. When asked in the press conference his thoughts on the record, Sinner chose not to compare him with the tennis greats.

It’s amazing to be next to these names. I cannot compare myself with these players, no? They have done so, so many things. I’m just trying to make my own little story. Happy about that. I like hard courts. I like these conditions. Especially when it’s not that hot like today, it’s very nice to play. Yeah, so happy how I’m trying to keep going as much as I can.

The two-time Grand Slam champion is scheduled to lock horns with Tristan Schoolkate in the second round. The Aussie went past Taro Daniel in four sets to reach the second round of the Australian Open for the first time.
