World No. 1 Jannik Sinner started his 2024 Wimbledon Championships campaign with a first-round win over Yannick Hanfmann on Monday (July 1). Despite dropping the third set, the Italian managed to finish the match in four sets.
The draw only gets harder for Sinner as he is up against his friend and compatriot Matteo Berrettini next. Even though Berrettini knows the surface better, Sinner has form on his side heading into the contest.
After his first-round win, Sinner stated that he was looking forward to facing Berrettini.
Tough match, that’s for sure. He played a final here. He knows very well how to play on this surface. It’s a big challenge for me. I’m looking forward to it. Every day is different. Let’s see what’s coming.
Jannik Sinner said during the on-court interview
They have played each other only once before, at the Canadian Open last year where Sinner emerged victorious. The World No. 1 will be eager to extend the win streak against Berrettini.

Wet grass causes Jannik Sinner to tumble during his first-round match at Wimbledon 2024
Jannik Sinner had an unfortunate fall while playing a shot in his maiden Grand Slam match as World No. 1. During his clash with Yannick Hanfmann, organizers had to close the roof due to inclement weather.
However, with the grass getting wet, Sinner fell to the ground while trying to hit a shot. The Italian later joked about the same, stating that first-round matches are always slippery.
Physically I feel good. The first round is always a bit more slippery.
Jannik Sinner said in his on-court interview
After the fall, Sinner got up holding his hip and limping, leaving fans worried as he had recently recovered from an injury. However, he soon brushed it off and showed no discomfort in his movement, much to everyone’s relief.
