Jannik Sinner has had an unforgettable summer this year. Just a few hours after winning the Cincinnati Open, news broke that the Italian had tested positive twice for a banned substance in March and avoided facing any suspension.
This resulted in immense criticism from current and former tennis players, directed at both Sinner and the tennis authorities. However, he has used the situation to his advantage by identifying his ‘best friends’ and ‘best enemies.’
It helps me to see who my friends are and who are not my friends. This is all part of a growing experience, no? I wish nobody has this experience to grow because this is a different way of experience, but you also realize that there is also a life outside of tennis, which are much more important than that what we do because our daily routine is to hit tennis balls and go in the gym. Then, you know, you see that some people, they are sick.Jannik Sinner said in a US Open press conference
The 23-year-old wasn’t suspended by the ATP but was stripped of all the ranking points (400) and the entire prize money he won in Indian Wells. He had lost in the semifinals of the first Masters 1000 tournament of the year against Carlos Alcaraz.
There are different things what come in my mind. Tennis is big for me because it showed me what I am as a person and how important the sport is, but in the other way there is a life outside of tennis, which is even more important. Trying to be healthy, surround yourself with good people. That for me, it is more important, no? Then on the tennis court obviously I try to do my best. I try to fight and let the spectators enjoy also the show. For me I believe that I have grown also as a person this period regardless of how everything is going, which hopefully can help me in the future.Jannik Sinner added
The World No. 1 is hoping to put it behind him and focus on the US Open, where he is bidding to win his second Grand Slam of the season after the Australian Open. He has reached the third round in New York following wins against Mackenzie McDonald and Alex Michelsen.
Jannik Sinner aims to extend his lead at the top of the ATP rankings with a good run at the US Open
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has come to the US Open aiming to win his second Grand Slam title and with it extend his lead at the top of the ATP rankings. The Italian currently sits atop the world rankings with 9,360 points.
Sinner is currently ahead of Novak Djokovic (7,460 points) and Carlos Alcaraz (7,360 points). However, he has two titles to defend in the coming months, in China and Vienna. Additionally, he reached the finals of the ATP World Tour Finals last year and will need to replicate that performance this year to avoid losing any ranking points.
The Italian has a great opportunity to extend his lead at the top of the world rankings at the US Open. He has only 180 points to defend this year and he has already defended half of them by reaching the third round in New York. On the other hand, Djokovic is the defending US Open champion and is defending 2,000 points while Alcaraz was a semifinalist last year and is defending 720 points.
