Jannik Sinner jokingly asked how much time was left for his US Open press conference to end when a journalist questioned him about the main differences of playing Carlos Alcaraz on different surfaces. Sinner couldn’t stop lauding his arch-rival, saying it’s good that someone like Alcaraz is a part of the tennis community.
Both youngsters have reached the third round on the back of strong performances, though Alcaraz faced some challenges against big-serving Reilly Opelka in the first round. Australia’s Alexei Popyrin was expected to make Sinner’s stay on court in the second round a bit difficult, but the Italian ace wasted not much time in knocking him out, with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 scoreline. At the press conference, Sinner was asked about the Spaniard.
I don’t know, I feel like he is an all-around player, obviously. I think we have seen that in many, many occasions, and winning Roland Garros and winning Wimbledon, and winning here. You know, it shows that he knows how to play on every surface. I’ve seen the match here, and he’s playing very, very good and not missing barely any shots at the moment.
The tennis world is moving on from the Big 3 as the last member, 38-year-old Novak Djokovic, is no longer a heavy favorite in Grand Slam events. This is why they eagerly wait for an Alcaraz-Sinner clash, expecting to witness nothing but an electrifying match.
But yeah, there are many, many things what makes him so difficult to play against, but it’s great for the sport. It’s good to have someone like Carlos, entertaining and great to watch, and that’s what people love. It’s great to have him.

Since the Italian Open, whenever the two played the same tournament (before the US Open), they ended up reaching the championship clash. Alcaraz has the upper hand when it comes to the head-to-head record, as in their four meetings this season, he won three matches, including the French Open.
Their last encounter ended in disappointment because, as Sinner was sick, he gave the walkover to Alcaraz in the first set of the Cincinnati Masters final. The five-time Grand Slam champion, who now leads 9-5 in the overall head-to-head matchups with Sinner, will face him at the US Open if they both reach the final. Alcaraz will meet Luciano Darderi in the third round.
Jannik Sinner analyzes his match against Alexei Popyrin
Before this US Open, Jannik Sinner faced Alexei Popyrin at the 2021 Madrid Open and lost that match in straight sets. The 24-year-old has now tied the head-to-head record 1-1 after their US Open clash. At the press conference after the win, Sinner, who converted five of his nine break points, saving the five he faced, analyzed his game.

It has been a very, very solid performance. I don’t think either of us served well today, so we had many rallies from the baseline, where I felt quite comfortable, and of course, I am very happy to advance to the next round.
Sinner is yet to drop a set. At Wimbledon this year, which he claimed by beating Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner dropped a set only in the final.
The four-time Grand Slam champion is bidding to win his third Major of the season after Australian Open and Wimbledon wins. He is also aiming to defend his title, and if he ends the event in his favor, he will become the first man since Roger Federer (2008) to defend the US Open title.
Sinner is on a 23-match winning streak in hard court Grand Slam events. He will next face Denis Shapovalov.
