World No. 1 Jannik Sinner finally played in front of his home fans in 2024 after a successful season. Despite a stellar year with two Grand Slam titles and three Masters 1000 titles, he hadn’t yet had the chance to share that success with his fans in Italy.

After defeating Alex de Minaur in his opening group-stage match at the ATP Finals, Sinner reflected on the energy he received from his enthusiastic fans in Turin. The Italian will next face Taylor Fritz in a rematch of this year’s US Open final.

It has to be the crowd. The energy. I love playing at home. It’s a huge, huge honor for me. I was just looking forward to it. I didn’t play Rome. My first match in Italy this year. The welcome was very warm. It was amazing.

Sinner missed the Rome Masters earlier this year due to a hip injury, which had also troubled him during his Monte Carlo defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He also withdrew from the Madrid Masters in that span.

The ATP Finals were held at the O2 Arena in London from 2009 to 2020 before moving to Turin. So far in Turin, two players—Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic—have claimed the title. Sinner hopes to join them as the third champion crowned in the Italian city.

Jannik Sinner shakes off slow start as he begins ATP Finals campaign

Playing his first match since winning the Rolex Shanghai Masters on October 13, Sinner quickly recovered after an early service break in the third game. He wrapped up the match in 85 minutes at the Inalpi Arena, securing a 1-0 record in the Ilie Nastase Group.

As last year’s finalist, Sinner returned to Turin as Italy’s first-ever World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings. Despite a brief lapse in his serve, the 23-year-old played confidently, using powerful groundstrokes to control the match. He stayed aggressive on returns, pushing De Minaur around the court to secure the win. The Italian crowd, including Flavio Cobolli, Jasmine Paolini, and former Juventus star Giorgio Chiellini, cheered him on.

With this victory, Sinner extended his unbeaten record against De Minaur to 8-0 and marked his seventh consecutive win. Now tied with Alexander Zverev for the most wins on tour this year at 66, Sinner aims to make it eight in a row when he faces Taylor Fritz in his next group-stage match on Tuesday.
