Jannik Sinner remains in the race for the top ranking after his Vienna title win. Even so, he admitted that passing Carlos Alcaraz before the season ends is not realistic. He said the lead is too large to overcome now. Alcaraz has held No.1 since lifting the US Open trophy.
Jannik Sinner still believes the battle will return next year. He has already shown he can challenge Alcaraz on the biggest stages. His goal is to close the gap with a strong finish. The respect between the two remains high. Sinner said in his post-match press conference:
For me, number 1 is already impossible. It’s not something I’m thinking about right now. It will be a goal for next year, but this year is no longer in my hands. Looking at how the year has gone, we’ve achieved great things. Now, I just want to finish the year in the best possible way. December will be a very important month for me, because I think I can make big changes and put in a lot of work. Preparing for next season will be vital. I’m already happy with what I’ve achieved this year. We’ll see how I can finish it.
Alcaraz secured his first year-end No.1 crown in 2022. His breakthrough US Open victory sealed the achievement and made history. He became the youngest men’s World No.1 ever. It proved how quickly he could rise to the top.
The Spaniard has continued to build on that success. Sinner pushed him throughout the season, though the doping ban kept him out of some important tournaments. That made it harder to stay close in the points race. Alcaraz now stands on the brink of ending another year as the top player in the world.
Carlos Alcaraz has a chance to seal the World No.1 ranking in Paris
Carlos Alcaraz arrives at the 2025 Paris Masters aiming for his first title at the event. He has already had a standout season with major wins at Roland Garros and the US Open. The world No.1 has collected eight trophies this year and reached two more finals.

Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner sit well ahead of the rest of the ATP field. Alcaraz holds a slim lead in the official rankings, with only 840 points separating them. Paris is important because Alcaraz has just 100 points to defend, while Sinner has none.
The season-long points race shows a bigger gap. Alcaraz has 11,050 points for 2025 compared to Sinner’s 9,010. With only Paris and the ATP Finals left, Alcaraz needs 451 more points to guarantee the year-end No 1.
A semifinal in Paris would almost seal it. Reaching the final would secure the top spot no matter what Sinner does. Winning the title would give Alcaraz a huge cushion going into 2026.
