- Jannik Sinner confronted a heckler during his match against Joao Fonseca at Indian Wells.
- Sinner won the match 7-6(6), 7-6(4) and advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time at Indian Wells.
- He has reached the quarterfinals in 11 of the 12 Masters 1000 events he has played since 2024.
Jannik Sinner rarely shows his frustration while competing. But on Tuesday, while he was locking horns with Joao Fonseca in the fourth round of Indian Wells, a heckler got on his nerves.
This happened when Sinner was trailing 5-6 but was on set point at 40-15 in the first set. He walked toward the stand and angrily pointed his finger at a spectator.
What he told the spectator was incomprehensible. While he was confronting the heckler, umpire Greg Allensworth came down and urged the crowd not to disturb the players during points.

En route to his 7-6(6), 7-6(4) win over Fonseca in what was also their first meeting on the tour, Sinner saved three set points. Now that the tennis world saw what happened when the two youngsters met for the first time, they are expecting many more such matches in the future, given that the Brazilian ace is backed by many to join Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to form another Big 3.
Sinner, who has set up a quarterfinal clash with another rising star Learner Tien, will be playing in the last eight of Indian Wells for the third time. The 24-year-old has now reached the quarterfinals in 11 of the 12 Masters 1000 events he has played since 2024.
Sinner has yet to win a title in the California desert. He has, however, played two semifinals, in 2023 and 2024.
Jamie Delgado on what opponents should do to tackle Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz
Last year at Wimbledon, Grigor Dimitrov took the first two sets during his fourth-round match against Jannik Sinner. The World No.2 won the match after receiving a walkover from the Bulgarian, who ruptured his pectoral muscle.

Jamie Delgado, who was coaching Dimitrov at that time, urged other players to take a leaf out of Dimitrov’s book and try to disrupt Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s game to challenge them.
To stay on the baseline and just try and out-hit him from there, but a lot of players do, whether that’s them being a bit stubborn with their own game or trying things, or they don’t maybe quite have the skill set to be able to play in a way that Grigor played him at Wimbledon. So yeah, part of the mindset for that match was, one, to play your game, but also to try and disrupt a little bit and try and stop Jannik from being comfortable and playing all the points in the same way, which of course he would like to do.
Jamie Delgado said on the Off Court with Greg podcast
Alcaraz is also competing in Indian Wells and has set up a fourth-round clash with Casper Ruud after surviving a scare against Arthur Rinderknech. The Spaniard is chasing his third title in the first Masters 1000 of the season, having won in 2023 and 2024. Last year, he lost to eventual champion Jack Draper in the semifinals.
That’s not just for Jannik. If you’re going to play Rafa [Nadal] or [Andy] Murray or [Novak] Djokovic or [Roger] Federer, they want to play the match on their terms, how they feel good, and how they’re controlling the points. So, as a lesser player, someone that’s ranked below, and you’re an underdog, why not try and disrupt a little bit more rather than just playing their game? The chances of playing their game and winning are pretty small.
Jamie Delgado added
Sinner and Alcaraz will only face each other if they reach the final. The Italian has yet to win a title this year. Alcaraz clinched the Australian Open and the Qatar Open.
