Jannik Sinner didn’t have a smooth start in his opening-round match at the Australian Open. World No. 36 Nicolas Jarry pushed the Italian to two back-to-back tie breaks before failing to repeat the same in the third set, losing with a scoreline of 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-1.
After the match, the World No.1, who had a 73-6 win-loss record last year, lavished some praise on his team, calling them the best in the world. His coaching team has Simone Vagnozzi, Darren Cahill, fitness coach Marco Panichi, and physiotherapist Ulises Badio.
The two-time Grand Slam champion now has a 2-1 head-to-head record over Jarry, having met in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2019 and in Beijing last year. He has also extended his winning streak to 16 matches thanks to his wins at the Shanghai Masters, ATP Finals, and the Davis Cup with Italy.
Jannik Sinner reveals what he likes the most in Australia
Jannik Sinner is the defending champion at the Australian Open, having won his first major last year by beating the then-two-time Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev in the final. After his match against Nicolas Jarry, Sinner was asked what he loves about Australia.
Despite the doping scandal and controversial comments from local man Nick Kyrgios, Sinner got a rousing welcome at the Australian Open. The meeting against Jarry was Sinner’s first official match of the season as he participated in two exhibition events Down Under before the season’s first major event.
Sinner is scheduled to lock horns with Tristan Schoolkate in the next round, which will also be their first meeting on the ATP Tour. The 23-year-old Australian player, who is No. 173 in the rankings, overcame Japan’s Taro Daniel in four sets in the first round.
