Jannik Sinner Makes Feelings Known After Dethroning Carlos Alcaraz as World No.1 Following Paris Masters Win

Jannik Sinner will not be ending the season as the year-end No.1 if he fails to win the ATP Finals as he has 1,500 points to defend.

Jannik Sinner has added one more Big Title to his trophy cabinet. On November 2, the Italian ace went past Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-6(4) to secure the Paris Masters for the first time in his career.

The win has helped him to reclaim his World No.1 ranking from Carlos Alcaraz, whose campaign in the last Masters 1000 of the season ended in a complete disaster as he lost his opening-round match in three sets against Cameron Norrie. Alcaraz had dethroned Sinner for the first time after denying his second consecutive US Open title.

When asked about his ranking at the press conference, Sinner talked about how he focuses only on his matches and maximizing his potential, and that he doesn’t pay much heed to the rankings table.

Well, it’s not only in my hands, but I’m of course happy. I knew from the beginning of the week that there was this chance. But as I said, you know, before the final, before every tournament or before every match, I try to put the best performance I can on the court, and then whatever comes, comes. And this is how I went on court. In Turin, I’m going to do the same.

Sinner, however, is in the second spot in live rankings because of the ATP Finals, where he will enter the year-end championships as the defending champion. At present, he has 11,500 points (official), while Alcaraz has 11,250 points. Sinner has lost 1,500 points in the live rankings because last year, he won all the round robin matches en route to the final victory.

Before this year, the four-time Grand Slam champion had never progressed beyond the third round of the Paris Masters. Sinner has now become the player with the most titles this season (five from nine finals) after Alcaraz, the winner of eight titles from 10 finals.

It was also the 24-year-old’s first Masters 1000 win of the season. Prior to the Paris Masters, Sinner lost the finals of the Italian Open and the Cincinnati Masters to Alcaraz.

The win has also helped Jannik Sinner take a 3-2 head-to-head lead over Felix Auger-Aliassime. It was also Sinner’s third consecutive (all this season) match win over the Canadian ace.

Merci. It’s never easy to lose in a final… but Jannik, congrats to you and your team. You push all the players and myself to improve and get better. I can only give you credit and tip my hat off to all the improvements since we’ve known each other. I think we were playing FIFA when we were 16 or 17.

Felix Auger-Aliassime said during the trophy presentation

The 25-year-old is still alive in the ATP Race to Turin and will be playing the ATP 250 event in Metz to secure a spot in the top eight. Lorenzo Musetti will also be in action this week for the same reason.

The players who have already qualified for the year-end championships are: Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, and Alex de Minaur. It’s uncertain whether Djokovic will feature in the Turin event, given that he skipped it last year as his only focus at this stage of his career is to win his 25th Major.

Alcaraz is yet to play a final at the ATP Finals. He reached the semifinals in 2023 but failed to progress to the last four last year. Defending champion Sinner lost the summit clash of the 2023 ATP Finals to Djokovic. Zverev has featured in seven ATP Finals, winning the title in 2018 and 2021. Fritz was the runner-up last year, while compatriot Shelton has qualified for the first time.
