World No. 1 Jannik Sinner remains optimistic about overcoming another setback from the tennis authorities regarding his doping scandal. However, the Italian expects more sleepless nights ahead until a verdict is reached.
Sinner tested positive twice for a banned substance at Indian Wells, which got to the news world in August. Fortunately for him and his fans, the 23-year-old escaped suspension from the ATP tour.
However, during his Round of 16 match at the China Open against Roman Safiullin, news emerged throughout the tennis community that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is set to reopen its investigation into Sinner’s doping case. WADA claims there is a “lack of evidence” to prove World No. 1’s innocence and reportedly aims to secure at least a one-year ban for the Italian.
This news has come as a surprise to both Sinner and his camp, who thought they were moving on from the case after his US Open title run. The Italian faced heavy criticism from some former and current tennis players, while many pointed fingers at the authorities for their double standards. Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova received bans for similar cases.
Despite the controversy, Sinner put it aside and performed at his best during the US Open, winning his second Grand Slam title of the season. He hopes to replicate that success at the China Open, where he is the defending champion this year.
Amidst suspension fear, Jannik Sinner advances to the China Open semifinals
Jannik Sinner now holds the record for the most ATP Tour wins in the 2024 season. The Italian ace secured his 58th victory of the year (58-5) by reaching the semifinals of the China Open on Monday. He defeated Czech player Jiri Lehecka with a score of 6-2, 7-6(6).
During the match, Sinner faced two set points at 4/6 in the second-set tiebreak. However, he rallied to win the match in one hour and 45 minutes. His next opponent will be Bu Yunchaokete, who upset fourth seed Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4.
Sinner is on a remarkable winning streak of 14 matches, starting from the Cincinnati Open. The top seed has also won the US Open during this remarkable winning run. In addition to this, he has won 50 consecutive matches against players ranked outside the world’s Top 20.
Sinner was in control for most of the match against Lehecka. He did not face a break point until 5-5 in the second set when Lehecka raised his level to create two chances. Unlike his earlier matches in Beijing, Sinner won this match without needing a third set. He now leads Lehecka 2-0 in their head-to-head meetings.
