Jannik Sinner feels ‘it’s nice to see new champions’ as he and Carlos Alcaraz won all Grand Slams in 2024

For the first time since 2002, no member of the Big 3 won a Grand Slam this year, with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz sharing the four Majors.

Jannik Sinner breezed past Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 inside Arthur Ashe Stadium to lift his second Grand Slam trophy of the season at the US Open, the first being the Australian Open. Sinner’s rival Carlos Alcaraz won the rest of the trophies, emerging victorious at the French Open and Wimbledon.

For the first time since 2002, a member of the Big 3 did not win a Grand Slam trophy in a season and Sinner and Alcaraz are now touted as players to dominate on the tour after the Big 3 era. While Roger Federer retired in 2022 after taking home 20 Slams, Rafael Nadal‘s continuous struggles with injuries have made him skip this year’s Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

Age is also catching up with Novak Djokovic, for he failed to win a single major trophy this season, with his first title being the Olympic gold medal. His best at Slams came at Wimbledon, where he reached the final.

After defeating Fritz in the US Open final, Sinner spoke about the importance of seeing new champions in Grand Slams.

It’s nice to see for the sport some new champions. I feel like the new generation we push each other, trying to improve.
Jannik Sinner told ESPN

Sinner has now clinched six titles on the ATP Tour this season, while Alcaraz has won three trophies along with the Olympic silver medal. The two youngsters are emerging as dominating forces on the circuit and are well-placed to dominate the men’s circuit as it heads into a new era without the Big 3.

Jannik Sinner reached the 10,000-point milestone on ATP Tour

Jannik Sinner became the only fourth man to win the two hard-court Slams in the same season, after Mats Wilander, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. The Italian is now the first from his country to win the US Open in singles, and the second (male or female) since Flavia Pennetta, who won in 2015.

Sinner hit the 10,000-point mark in the rankings when he reached the US Open final and after winning it, he crossed the 11,000-point milestone, joining the elite list of players who have done it so in the past. The Italian, who became the World No.1 after the French Open, is way ahead of second-placed Alexander Zverev with a 4,000-point lead.

Also for the first time since 1993, all the Grand Slams in a year have been lifted by players who are 23 or younger. Sinner is 23 years old, while Carlos Alcaraz is 21.
