World No.1 Jannik Sinner advanced to his first US Open final with a 7-6, 7-5, 6-2 scoreline over 25th seed Jack Draper. The Italian has reached his second Grand Slam final of the season after winning the Australian Open earlier this year.

Sinner will play either Frances Tiafoe or Taylor Fritz, who are contesting in the all-American US Open semifinals in the night session. The top seed played Tiafoe recently in the Cincinnati Open final and won in straight sets.

Sinner took advantage of a physically shot Draper, who vomited twice in the second set. Although the top seed also had physical issues, his experience, and big-match toughness got him over the line. The Italian will be looking to become the fifth player this century to do the Cincinnati Open-US Open double in the same season. Andy Roddick (2003), Roger Federer (2005, 2007), Rafael Nadal (2013) and Novak Djokovic (2018, 2023) are the other players to reach this milestone.

Jannik Sinner receives huge boost in securing year-end World No.1 ranking

Jannik Sinner’s US Open semi-final win has given him a great opportunity to end the season as the World No.1. The Italian now sits at 10480 points, which is 3045 points ahead of second-placed Alexander Zverev.

Carlos Alcaraz, who has won two Grand Slams this season, sits at an astonishing 6690 points. The reason is not having a consistent season. The Spaniard has won three titles this season, accumulating 5000 points. However, he has only made 1690 points for the remainder of the season.

Novak Djokovic, who ends the season without any Grand Slams for the first time since 2017, sits at 5560 points. He is returning to action in the Shanghai Masters, but his overall points may decline further considering he is defending titles at the BNP Paribas Masters and the World Tour Finals.

After the US Open, Sinner has to defend ATP 500 titles in China and Vienna. Moreover, he reached the finals of the World Tour Finals last season. However, the gap he has between himself and Zverev gives him a bigger margin for error.
