In Short
  • Jannik Sinner completed the Sunshine Double by winning the Miami Open, marking his third consecutive Masters 1000 title.
  • He expressed satisfaction with his service game, highlighting its importance during physically demanding matches.
  • Sinner is now targeting the No.1 ranking, needing just over 1,190 points to reclaim the top spot from Carlos Alcaraz.

Jannik Sinner has etched his name in the record books after completing the Sunshine Double on March 29. He defeated Jiri Lehecka in straight sets to win his third consecutive Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open, making him the eighth man to accomplish the Sunshine Double feat.

Before Miami, Sinner lifted his first title of the season, the Indian Wells Masters, against Daniil Medvedev, also winning his first title in the tournament. The last time he lost a set in a Masters 1000 event was at the 2025 Shanghai Masters, where he played as the defending champion but cramps forced him to hand the walkover to Tallon Griekspoor in the third round.

After the Shanghai exit, Sinner lifted the Paris Masters, Indian Wells, and the Miami Open without dropping a set. When Sinner was asked at the press conference what part of his game he’s most satisfied with, he said it’s his service game.

I have to go with the serve, certainly, especially this week, where I think I served very well. When you feel you are starting to get a bit tired physically and need some free points, that’s when the serve helps you a lot. In that regard, I am very strengthened. In fact, I believe I served even better here than in Indian Wells, but it’s also true that we worked hard on it with the team. Now it’s time to go to the clay courts, where you need to use the serve differently; you can’t just hit it flat, so we’ll see how it goes.

Sinner was broken just once throughout his Miami campaign (against Alex Michelsen in the fourth round). In just six matches, the four-time Grand Slam champion smashed 70 aces.

Jannik Sinner on dethroning Carlos Alcaraz from the No.1 spot

Carlos Alcaraz, after his victory at the Australian Open and Qatar Open, lost to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semifinal before he suffered a shock third-round exit in Miami. Because Jannik Sinner did not have any points to defend in the Sunshine Double tournaments, he gained 2,000 ranking points after his wins, and this only helped him to close the rankings gap between him and the World No.1.

Sinner is now eying the No.1 spot, but he also knows how Alcaraz performs on the clay swing, where both will kick-start their campaign at the Monte Carlo Masters. The Spaniard will be playing as the defending champion in The Principality. Sinner had skipped the tournament last year due to his doping ban.

Apart from the Monte Carlo Masters, Alcaraz also lifted titles at the Italian Open and the French Open, and he also made the final of the Barcelona Open. In total, the seven-time Grand Slam champion has 4,300 points to defend in the clay-court events.

I’m focused on my game. The ranking will depend on this. Carlos has been consistent for a long time, and now the clay court season begins, where we all know how good he is. For me, right now, it’s most important to recover, enjoy this moment, but I don’t have much time to adapt on clay, although I do want to play in Monte Carlo.

Jannik Sinner said at the press conference

Sinner needs just over 1,190 ranking points to reclaim his top spot. Last year on the clay swing, Sinner featured in the finals of the Italian Open and the French Open, but he lost both to Alcaraz. He has so far won just one title on the clay swing: the 2022 Croatia Open by defeating the Murcia native.

Before the Sunshine Double events, Sinner lost to eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic in five sets in the Australian Open semifinal. Next at the Qatar Open, Jakub Mensik knocked him out in the quarterfinals.
