Jannik Sinner is not often one to complain about issues in tennis, but when asked about his least favorite part of his career as a professional athlete, he didn’t hesitate. The 24-year-old ensured his stay at Indian Wells continued as he claimed his second win at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in California.
Sinner entered the Indian Wells Open without a title to his name this season. He opened his campaign at the Australian Open, where he reached the semi-finals for the third consecutive season, seeking to win the title for the third time. But he failed to get past Novak Djokovic in five sets after four hours.
After a two-week break, he returned to the court at the Doha Open. There, he was seeking to win his maiden Qatar title but fell shockingly to Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals, despite being the favorite. However, he has never won the Indian Wells tournament and has not reached its final.
The Italian star is seeking to change the current state of things this season as debate on whether he’s undergoing a crisis period in his career hit another high after his loss at the Doha Open. He now has a chance of redeeming himself in the California desert, by winning the tournament.
Nonetheless, after winning his third-round match at the Masters 1000 tournament, Sinner was asked about his least favorite part of his career. The 24-year-old revealed that he finds the press conferences at the tournament the least favorite thing to do as he loves going to the court to play or visiting beautiful places around the host city:
What I like the least are the press conferences (smiles), always answering the same questions. It’s not that I dislike it. It’s part of the job, you know. I like going out, playing, and living. I think we have a wonderful life. We see so many fantastic places… Obviously, by doing it over and over every year, you always go to the same places, so you already know beforehand what kind of places you like a bit more and which ones you like a bit less.
Sinner finished the 2025 season with six titles, including two Grand Slams. Four of the six titles came in the last five tournaments he featured in that year. His two losses this year have been uncharacteristic of him. The World No. 2 is known for beating players ranked lower than him. He will be looking forward to running in Indian Wells.
Jannik Sinner books his place in the fourth round of the Indian Wells
Jannik Sinner found his rhythm on the court on Sunday (March 8) at Indian Wells, where he overcame Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2. The Italian star dropped serve in the opening game, but he recovered brilliantly, showcasing flashes of his powerful forehand shots in the second set to win the match after an hour and 11 minutes.

He’s in the fourth round of the Indian Wells for the fifth consecutive time. He has also improved his head-to-head record against Shapovalov to 2-1, extending his record to 19-0 against left-handers. He praised the Canadian star after the match, while pointing out that he reacted in the best way after a tough start:
Denis is a high quality player, as we know. He’s an in-form player, so I’m very happy with my performance. I tried to stay solid at the baseline, but also a bit more aggressive in the second set, which helped me. It was a tough start for me, but I’m happy with how I reacted.
Sinner will face Joao Fonseca next at the tournament. It will be their first meeting on tour. Fonseca has only one loss against players ranked in the top 30 since September, while winning seven. Sinner is yet to drop a set at the tournament, but Fonseca is into his first round of 16 in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
