Jannik Sinner is the new US Open champion. The Italian defeated American No. 1 Taylor Fritz in the final on Sunday (September 8) to clinch his first title in New York. It is his second Grand Slam title, following his Australian Open win earlier this year. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz won the titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

With this, the Alcaraz-Sinner pair joined Roger FedererRafael Nadal (2017) and Novak Djokovic-Nadal (2019) as the only male pairs to split the Majors in a single season. It is also the first time in 22 years that none of the Grand Slams were won by a member of the Big 3.

Well, it is a bit different, for sure. I mean, it's something new, but it's also nice to see. Nice to see new champions. Nice to see new rivalries. I always have players and I will always have players who are going to make me a better player, because there are going to be times where they beat me. Then you have to try to find a way how to win against certain players.
Jannik Sinner said at his post-match press conference

After Federer retired in 2022, Nadal and Djokovic won three of the four Grand Slams in 2022. Last year, Djokovic won three of the four Majors.

While Nadal has been sidelined with injuries, Djokovic could not win any Grand Slam this year. The Serbian missed out on his only chance when he lost to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.

Despite US Open win, Jannik Sinner points out how he can further improve his game

The 23-year-old gave his struggles with his serves as an example and emphasized the need to continue working hard if he wanted to become a better player.

Today we saw that not everything was perfect. You know, I could have served slightly better, but, you know, this makes me realize that the work never stops. It's always a continue work which, in the end of the day, if you want to be a better player you always have to work, and you have to have these daily routines, accept difficult times on court.

In the final, Sinner made five double faults as compared to Fritz’s four, while the American hit 29 winners to Sinner’s 23. Fritz was also ahead in getting the first serve right with 59% of them going in while Sinner could only get 51% of his first serves right.

What made the difference in the end, was the Italian doing better than Fritz in unforced errors (21 to 34), win percentage on 1st and second serve, and also in breakpoints and receiving points won.
