Jannik Sinner has started his campaign in Beijing to defend his China Open title. He was sluggish in his first match against Nicolas Jarry he played on Thursday (September 26) inside the Diamond Court. But in no time, he gained the momentum and capitalized on it to emerge as winner with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

After the match, Sinner paid tribute to his late aunt. His aunt, Meggi Rauchegge, passed away on Sunday (September 21) at the age of 56 after battling an illness. Before her demise, an emotional Sinner dedicated his victory to her after clinching his maiden title at the US Open. His aunt was the sister of his mother, Siglinde Sinner, and since his childhood, she had been an important part of the family.

It’s a very difficult moment. She is a very important person in my life because my parents used to work all the time, and every time I came back home after school or whatever, and my parents weren’t there, my aunt sometimes arrived.

Jannik Sinner said in his on-court interview after US Open triumph

Sinner also said that though he has worked hard to be at this stage, “there’s a life” beyond the court, and so he wanted to share the US Open victory with her. The China Open first-round match was Sinner’s first since the death of his aunt and after winning the match, the 23-year-old touched his heart and sent a kiss toward the sky.

After the match, Sinner stated that playing against Jarry was tough, but he was happy to beat the Chilean.

In the first set, I was struggling to return his serve and he broke me. I just tried to stay there mentally. The first round at any tournament is never easy and playing against him is very tough.

Jannik Sinner said

Sinner is 56-5 on the season and has won six titles, including his first two Grand Slams at the Australian Open and the US Open. He will next play either lucky loser Roman Safiullin or former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka.
