Since returning from his suspension, Jannik Sinner has only become more polished and unstoppable on the clay surface. His third victory at the Roland Garros was yet another testament to his masterful skills.

After a nearly flawless performance outclassing Jiri Lehecka in the third round, the World No. 1 made a light-hearted remark on his coach Simone Vagnozzi’s birthday, linking it to his performance. Vagnozzi who has been coaching Sinner since 2022, celebrated his 42nd birthday on 30th May.

Simone, my coach, had a birthday yesterday. Usually when he has a birthday, I never play good. Luckily I didn’t play yesterday.

Sinner is aiming for his first Grand Slam trophy outside of the hard court surface. He had an extremely dominating performance upon his return to tour at the Italian Open, only to be stopped by Carlos Alcaraz in the finals. The three-time Grand Slam champion has continued his excellent form in Paris, where he is yet to drop a set.

Jannik Sinner decimates Jiri Lehecka in the third round

Jannik Sinner needed just 94 minutes to dismantle Jiri Lehecka 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 in a commanding third-round display on Saturday. There was no let-up from the World No. 1 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, where he raced through the opening 11 games without dropping a beat. Lehecka, visibly overwhelmed by the Italian’s tempo and consistency, could only offer brief resistance as Sinner cruised comfortably into the fourth round.

Actually this morning I said to my team I’m feeling well and physically ready. We had to go very hard in the beginning. Because I feel like the start of slams are very important.. Which then gives you the confidence to keep going. I warmed up very well. I felt very good. After 25 minutes I was feeling great. Just a relaxed morning. Tried to go on court with a good focus. My team is good, they give me the right tactics. I tried to play them in the match. It’s a combination of also being happy on court.

Displaying sharp footwork, laser-precise groundstrokes, and relentless returning, Sinner never allowed the Czech a foothold. The Italian’s serve remained rock-solid throughout, conceding just nine points behind it — a testament to the balance and control that’s become a hallmark of his game.

This also marks his second bagel of the tournament, after having bageled his second-round opponent Richard Gasquet in the second set. Sinner also had a moment from the match go viral, as he hit a shot in a pose reminiscent of a ‘ballerina’.

Jannik Sinner will face Andrey Rublev in the next round of the Roland Garros

The win not only marked Jannik Sinner’s 17th consecutive Grand Slam match victory but also took his season record to 15-1. Awaiting him in the Round of 16 is 17th seed Andrey Rublev, who progressed via a walkover after Frenchman Arthur Fils withdrew due to a back injury.

Sinner leads their ATP head-to-head 6-3 and will enter the upcoming match with momentum and confidence. They have played each other thrice on clay, with their last meeting on the surface being in the 2023 Roland Garros, where the Italian had to retire. Before that, Sinner won both their meetings on clay.

Looking ahead, the draw is set for a potential quarterfinal clash between Sinner and his friend, fifth seed Jack Draper, should both players progress. After a commanding straight-set victory over Joao Fonseca in the third round, Draper will play Alexander Bublik in the fourth round.
