World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has refused to respond to comments from Nick Kyrgios after the Australian criticized him aggressively following the doping controversy. The Italian had tested positive twice for a banned substance in March but avoided getting suspended.
As a result, Sinner faced heavy criticism from various media outlets and fellow tennis players, including the 2022 Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios. many questioned why the news was not made public immediately and wondered how Sinner avoided any ban despite two positive doping tests.
Kyrgios even stated that he won’t be hospitable to Sinner in the future though the Australian added that it’s nothing personal. Sinner accepted that while everyone, including Kyrgios, was free to voice their views on the subject, he refused to engage in a discussion with him or respond to his comments.
I don’t want to respond to what Kyrgios said about me. Everyone is free to say whatever they want, so it’s okay. What if he were to interview me on court? It would definitely be different, but I don’t know. I don’t know what to say. Maybe IF I say something now, the reaction will be different because you live in the moment. But no, I’m always very relaxed. I’m someone who forgets something quickly. Like I said, everyone is free to say anything, so that’s how it is.Jannik Sinner said at a US Open press conference (H/T: We Love Tennis)
The Italian has been under a cloud of controversy since winning the Cincinnati Open last week. Despite this, he hopes to maintain his focus and perform well at the US Open, where he hopes to clinch his second Grand Slam title.
Jannik Sinner demolishes Alex Michelsen to reach US Open third round
Jannik Sinner secured his 50th win of the season and his 30th on hard courts when he defeated American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 score. The 23-year-old has had a remarkable 2024, winning five titles, including his first Major at the Australian Open.
Sinner, currently ranked No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, played aggressively and forced Michelsen to make mistakes. Although the top seed started the match slowly and lost his serve early, he soon found his rhythm. He broke Michelsen’s serve in the ninth game of the first set and dominated the rest of the match. The American struggled with his shot depth, leading to 31 unforced errors, and went down in just one hour and 40 minutes.
This win marks Sinner’s second victory against the 20-year-old this month, following their meeting in Cincinnati. He is now through to the third round at the US Open for the fourth straight year, where he will face Christopher O’Connell.
Sinner’s best performance at the US Open came in 2022 when he lost a tough five-set quarterfinal to Carlos Alcaraz. Earlier this month, he became the first player to qualify for the ATP Finals. He is now aiming for the ATP Year-End No. 1 ranking, with Alcaraz being his closest competitor.
