Italian tennis ace Jannik Sinner is assured of reaching the top of the ATP rankings as Novak Djokovic pulled out of the 2024 Roland Garros midway through the tournament. The Italian is set to script history as he will become the first from his country to be crowned as the World No. 1 player. It will be a moment for the ages but Sinner is not going gaga over this achievement.
The 22-year-old Italian says that while it is a huge achievement for him to reach the top of the rankings, he does not want to focus on that for now. Instead, Sinner is focusing on his semifinal match against Carlos Alcaraz at the Grand Slam tournament.
The reigning Australian Open champion acknowledged that this achievement is a result of the hard work he has put in over the years. Sinner also expressed his happiness but was quick to shift his focus at the next biggest challenge for him.
As far as I am concerned, I am very happy with this success. It is the fruit of the work we do every day. I'm obviously happy to get to this position but in two days there is a very important match for me in the semi-finals, so I'm focusing on that for now. But yes, yes, of course, I am very happy to reach this position.Jannik Sinner said. (H/T: We Love Tennis)
Janik Sinner’s rise to World No. 1
While Jannik Sinner wants to stay put and wait for the right moment to celebrate his achievement of becoming the new World No. 1, the tennis fraternity is already going berserk. The 22-year-old has scripted history by achieving this feat and will have his name etched in golden letters.
Sinner’s rise to the No. 1 is nothing less than an inspirational story. The Italian was struggling to win consistently a few moths back. However, the Italian worked on his fitness as well as his gameplay and then he was right up there, challenging the best in the world.
The 22-year-old beat Novak Djokovic in the Davis Cup Finals and then replicated his heroics in the Australian Open semifinal. His win against Daniil Medvedev in the final was also a historic match considering the fact that Sinner came back from 0-2 to win it. Sinner continued his form in the subsequent tournaments and soon replaced Carlos Alcaraz as the World No. 2.
After that, the Italian’s consistent successes and Djokovic’s struggles at winning tournaments meant Sinner had the chance to dethrone the Serbian who has been at the helm for quite some time now. After reaching the semifinals in Paris, Sinner has ensured he will sit at the top of the ATP rankings.
